Post Season Question

At the time of this writing, the most probable playoff teams are...
Killer Bees
Sidewinders
DVs
Drillers
the winner of the MFD: Inmates, Buckeyes, or Nads
the winner of the BUD: Rhinos or Wahoos
The Zaps are the only other team who might sneak into that group.

So here's my question... How many non-Texas teams have to be in the playoffs for it to be cheaper to either hold them somewhere else OR to play them via netplay?

I mean, if the playoff teams were decided by today's standings, we'd have:
the Bees of Nashville, TN
the Snakes of Lexington, KY
the DVs of Tulsa, OK
the Drillers of Lewisville, TX
the Inmates of Waco, TX
and the Rhinos of, well... I guess of Washington, D.C.

That's only 2 Texas teams and only 1 that's really a DFW-area team. But what if the Nads win the MFD? Hey, it's possible! Then we replace the Waco team with a Chicago team! And let's not forget the Zaps. Like the Nads, the Zaps over .500 but with fewer than average games played. What if the Zaps replace the Drillers as a wild card team? It is totally possible for NASOMA to have a playoff with NO Texas teams. What then? Do we continue to fly all of these teams in to DFW just so they can sleep in the McGwire and Pujols suites and watch Bryan flickin' the bean for two days?

Everyone is certainly welcome to come here (or Shawn's, I assume) and roll the dice like we usually do. I don't mind hosting even in years like this (and the several years to come) when I won't be playing. But maybe it's time to look at other options. I hate the idea of the playoffs being netplayed, but it also seems weird for some teams to play 150 or so games on the computer only to make the playoffs and have to roll dice.

What do you guys think?

And by the way, this came up at Terry's a couple of weeks ago... As regards regular season, face to face games... BOTH teams must agree before the games can be played on the computer. So for you dice-rolling fans, it's okay to tell Terry that you want to roll the games. hehehe

For whatever it's worth, in my other league playoff games are only played netplay (only one other DFW team in the league), and it works well. It is a bit of a bummer because we can't all be together having fun and talking baseball like we do in NASOMA though. I figure if the Wahoos are ever gonna make it back to a world series (in this lifetime), it'll be on netplay and nobody will believe it anyway.

Yeah, but in that league, there are also NO dice games. Ever. No face to face. And seldom even a shoulder-to-shoulder game. Right?

Due to the rising costs of airfare, I would not be opposed to playing the games via netplay. It is nice to get together, but would be really expensive should your scenario play out. That is just my opinion though, I am up for whatever. Maybe we should vote on it?

That is correct. No dice play in the other league and rare shoulder-to-shoulder games.

And Beeboy is right, too. With airfare on the rise, an all out-of-state playoff is probably gonna be EXPENSIVE.

As an alternative idea, and in fairness to the entire league regarding the split of travel expense: What if the non-playoff teams didn't fully subsidize the travel expenses? For instance, the individual owner would be responsible for a third or half of his fare, and the league would pool the other dollars(?). If a playoff owner didn't want to participate, he could stay home and netplay with those that did go to DFW. Just an idea to keep the cost down for the non-playoff guys, while still giving the playoff bound owners a chance to either travel or not.
The thought of winning my first NASOMA championship while sitting at the den PC in my underwear while drinking a 'Nati Light is not very desirable (on more levels than one!).

The Baptist Bowl contingent would prefer face-to-face play-off format, but will go with the prevailing vote.

I like the system we have now for everyone paying an equal part of the play-off travel costs. Maybe a change would benefit the Inmates, since we only make the post season every other year or so, but I think the current system is equitable.

Could Tulsa be the center of the universe this year? Run the wife and cats off and lets assault the DV toilet with full Zapper anger-turd force!

DD,
Tulsa would love to be the center of the NASOMA universe this fall - the biggest issue would be that airline schedules and fares are probably more difficult than DFW. My guess would be that Southwest into Love would be as convenient for the Mullen boys as a trip to Tulsa.
One other note - getting the season done by early Sept would allow a month+ ticket purchase- which still are reasonably priced (still higher than in years past)- but certainly better than waiting until Nov. 10 to buy a ticket for Nov. 20th playoffs.
GET THOSE GAMES PLAYED!

Re: the DVs comment - In my opinion, its all or nothing...if we decide to netplay, everyone should netplay and if we decide to play face-to-face every playoff team should attend. We should split the cost by 16 and be done with it. Zaps, play your fockin games man...

I keep forgetting Tulsa equals Waco in the whole scheme of important travel destinations.

Is there still a college in Tulsa? At least Waco has Baylor somethingorother... And DR PEPPER!

Maybe we can visit our buddy in Little Rock? They have airplanes.

we HAVE played the playoffs before with netplay (sultans vs fungoes, i think) and by telephone (tweeners vs warpigs with the commish as the middle man). and it seems like there may be more instances like that... but my vote would be to keep the face to face gathering with dice for the playoffs. i don't mind forking over my 1/16th even when my team sucks. but maybe in a year like this, DFW is not the most logical of sites. or maybe it is; i don't know.

Waco can certainly be the sight of the play-offs. For some reason beyond our comprehension, tickets to Waco (via DFW) are often MUCH less expensive than getting off of the plane in Dallas. Don't know why, but it's often that way. Really. No shit. And the turbo-prop service is making way for jets.

And the Entertainment Committee can arrange for us to go to the Dr. Pepper Museum.

And there are topless bars in Waco...although one or two of them have beings of dubious gender as the center of entertainment.

if we don't end up getting everybody here, thought of an alternative to the netplay idea.

Buy a web cam. It's certainly cheaper than airfare and you could roll dice (have each cam zeroed in on where the dice are).
