College Baseball

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... I don't understand college baseball.

Game 1 of the College World Series just started. UC-Irvine vs Texas. First inning, UC-Irvine gets their leadoff hitter on 2nd thanks to an error. The Anteater coach then calls on his #2 hitter to sacrifice the runner to third. He just gives away an out from a guy good enough to bat second on a CWS team. His bunt is successful and the runner goes to third - where he is stranded. We learn at this time that the #1 and #2 ranked teams in all of college baseball in terms of my sacrifice bunts are the two teams playing right now.

Bottom of the 1st. The Longhorn leadoff batter walks. The #2 hitter, of course, is asked to bunt him over. The starting pitcher for Irvine is pretty jittery, though, and walks him on 4 pitches. So now it's first and second, no outs, and Texas' best hitter is up against a guy struggling to find the strike zone. So what happens? He sacrifices the runners over on the first pitch - where they are stranded.

A quote from the UC-Irvine head coach: "I go in to every game wanting to win 1-0. And if I can't do that, I want to win 2-1."

I just don't understand college baseball.

Warpigs 5, Nads 5

Games netplayed today...

@ The BallSac

Gm1 - Warpigs win 2-1. Yadier Molina and Yoenis Cespedes had back-to-back RBI singles in the 6th inning. Stephen Strasburg (7-3) went 6 innings for the win. Michael Wacha got a 2-inning save and was bailed out in the 8th when A.J. Pollock threw out the tying run at the plate.

Gm2 - Nads win 7-6 in 12 innings. Kurt Suzuki doubled off of Wacha in the 12th inning for the walk off win. The game had been extended in dramatic fashion in the top of the 9th when Ryan Flaherty hit a 2-out, 2-run homer to tie the game. Anthony Swarzak pitched well in relief for the win.

Gm3 - Warpigs win 4-2. Cespedes hit 2 solo homers. Adam Wainwright (10-3) went 7 innings for the win. Wacha got the save.

@ The BallPork

Gm4 - Nads win 3-2. All those coming to the park for the glamour showdown between Ryan Flaherty and Juan Fucking Lagares were not disappointed. Lagares broke up a 0-0 game in the top of the 9th with a 3-run shot off of Tommy Milone. That homer took the shine off of another Ryan Flaherty homer, a 2-run shot in the bottom of the 9th that had the Nads all tensed up.

Gm5 - Nads win 4-3. Adrian Gonzalez homered off of Wainwright in the 8th to break up a 3-3 tie. Juan Fucking Lagares came up big again, hitting a 2-run triple in the 4th inning. The Pigs loaded the bases in the 9th, but came up empty.

@ The BallSac

Gm6 - Warpigs win 3-1. Strasburg (8-3) gave up singles to the first two batters of the game, but allowed only one more single the rest of the game. The complete game, 3-hit win was aided by 14 Pig hits.

Gm7 - Nads win 4-3 in 10 innings. Adrian Gonzalez hit a walk off double in the 10th. The Warpigs are now 0-8 in extra inning games.

@ The BallPork

Gm8 - Warpigs win 2-0. Wily Peralta (5-13) continues to pitch well and was finally rewarded with a win. Casey Fien recorded his 8th save, and Yoenis Cespedes homered.

Gm9 - Nads win 6-3. This was the only Nad win over the Pigs that wasn't a 1-run victory. Alex Rios was 3-5 with 3 RBI.

Gm10 - Warpigs win 10-0. The Nads seemed to be sagging down the stretch. The Pigs had 11 extra base hits, and NONE of them were homers. Wainwright (11-4) got back in the win column.

Booting Up

Here's a stat oddity that happened during the Warpig/Inmate series. Thru the first 58+ games of this season, the Warpigs had not commited an error at shortstop - this despite a 2e18 manning the position for all but 1 inning of 1 game. *We had also not made an error by a pitcher. The streak was almost 59 games long - a total of 527.2 innings without an error at shortstop or pitcher. Then, with 1 out in the 7th inning of game 59, Brandon Crawford booted a grounder. The following batter rolled pitcher-x and Tommy Milone made our first pitcher error. Back to back batters, and both streaks were over.

* I don't know the record for number of games/innings for going errorless at shortstop - probably that year Cal Ripken had the low e-rating they created just for him. I do know, however, the record for consecutive games/innings without an error by a pitcher. It is 2,641 games and 25,065 innings by the Killer Bees. The streak is currently active.

Warpigs 3, Zaps 2

Games played @ The BallPork...

Game 1 - Warpigs win 8-2. Yoenis Cespedes goes 4-4 to lead the Pig offense. Zack Wheeler gets an early hook (because he sucks), and Casey Fien is awarded the win in relief. Jon Niese takes the loss.

Game 2 - Zaps win 9-1. The Zaps had 13 hits: a homer (by Russell Martin) and 12 singles. They also walked 9 times. News flash: Max Scherzer is pretty good. Wily Peralta is not. Here's an interesting look at a pitcher's progression thru the Zap batting order.
  • Peralta's 1st time thru the lineup: Zap hitters go 0-8 with 1 walk. They can't figure him out.
  • Peralta's 2nd time thru the lineup: Zap hitters go 5-8 with a homer and 1 walk. They figured him out.
  • Peralta's 3rd time thru the lineup: Zap hitters go 1-3 with FOUR walks. Wily learns his lesson and stops throwing strikes.
Game 3 - Warpigs win 8-2. This game was 2-2 into the bottom of the 6th when Yadier Molina hit a 2-run double and Yonder Alonso followed with a 2-run homer off of Cole Hamels. Darwin Barney added a homer in the 7th. Peralta pitched better this game, but Tommy Milone gets the win in relief. Michael Bourn and Cody Ross both had 3 hits. Jose Reyes had 3 hits for the Zaps.

Game 4 - Zaps win 3-2. Wheeler had his best game of the year, going 8 innings and giving up only 6 hits and a walk. But another Zack - Greinke - outpitched him and won the game.

Game 5 - Warpigs win 13-3. Francisco Liriano took one for the team, going the distance but allowing 13 hits. Adam Wainwright (9-3) went 5 innings to get the win. Milone threw the last 3 for his first save. Cody Ross and Cespedes both homered for the Pigs. And as this was the first day of full rosters, Nick Castellanos made his MLB debut with a pinch-hit, RBI single.

Inmates 7, Warpigs 3

Have you ever lost a game in extra innings when your left fielder fell down after making a catch, allowing the winning run to tag up and score FROM SECOND?

The Inmates can write his own damn game stories.

The only good that came out of this, is that HE is the one about to have his life turned upside down. That alone makes me laugh.

I hate Strat.

And now for something completely different...

Inmates 7 – Warpigs 3 (Inmate version):

Inmates 5 – Warpigs 2 (Baptist Bowl): Jones hits a pair of homers, Quintana outduels Fernandez. Garden-variety, Bb game with nothing spectacular or unusual happening.

Inmates 4 – Warpigs 3 (12 Innings – Baptist Bowl): Salazar and Strasburg duel to a 3-3 tie with Salazar K’ing 10 in 8 innings while allowing only three hits (including a 3-run tater). Bizarreness starts to creep into the events as both Pig leftfielders make 2-base errors which result in unearned Inmate runs - - the last of which scored in the bottom of the 12th after a two-out walk-off double by Beltre.

Warpigs 7 – Inmates 2 (Baptist Bowl): What is apparently a totally expected outcome – Parker pitches poorly and the Pigs jump in his shit – has a pair of unusual Inmate innings. In the 3rd, Peralta walks four Inmates (including Beltre with the bases juiced) but the Inmates can only manage one run when Jones misses a BP homer chance with two outs. Then in the 7th the Inmates manage four consecutive singles only to have Sanchez hit into a double-fucking-play with the bases loaded to end the inning. Again, lots of thunder with no rain as the LDMF score just once in the inning.

Inmates 4 – Warpigs 1 (BallPork): Despite scoring 7 runs in game three of the series the Pigs really don’t hit very well. Yadier lives in the 2 column (shades of Mike Trout), and the Porkers once again cannot solve Quintana. More semi-weird shit: Parra begins a stretch where he starts the Inmate 1st inning with an extra-base hit in 4 of 5 games. Peralta is hit hard in the first two innings.

Inmates 13 – Warpigs 10 (BallPork): Wheeler gets pummeled, allowing nine runs on nine hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings. Parker is the Inmate starter, however, so the Porcine Pounders make it a game anyway before running out of innings.

Warpigs 6 – Inmates 4 (Baptist Bowl): The Pigs finally solve Quintana. Altuve hits into a DFP after the Inmates score two in the 9th, ending the game.

Inmates 3 – Warpigs 1 (Baptist Bowl): Peralta and Parker pitch in very un-Parker and Peralta-like fashion, engaging in a pitcher’s duel. A Rizzo 3-run tater is all the scoring the Inmates get and need.

Warpigs 5 – Inmates 3 (BallPork): The last Bb game, although Peralta does pitch OK.

Inmates 5 – Warpigs 4 (10 Innings – BallPork): Inmates get 16 hits but generate very little offense. Wheeler is yanked in the 1st.  Jump to the bottom of the 9th: The Warpig 20-sided die misses a 1-15 HR with a runner on (settling for a triple), but get a 1-3 single one batter later to send the game into extra innings. It didn’t matter. A Segura single scores Rizzo in the 10th for the Inmate win to keep both teams on the emotional rollercoaster.

Inmates 5 – Warpigs 4 (10 Innings – BallPork): Same type of stuff in the series finale. Inmates head into the bottom of the 9th with Grilli on the hill and a 4-3 lead. He strikes out the side!...but not before allowing a game-tying homer to send the game into extra innings. Move to the Inmate 10th for final weirdness: Sogard and Pierzynski both single with one out, putting Inmates on first and second. Satin hits a flyball lf x, which winds up being an F1 with a rare play – the fielder catches the ball but is dazed after running into wall. Both runners tag and advance two bases. Sogard scores the winning run, Grilli doesn’t fuck up the last of the 10th, and the Inmates win again.

Postscript: This is not a prototypical Pig team. The starting pitching is good for the first three rotation spots, but the bullpen is only OK. There is no offense. Yadier’s card is scary, but he lives in the 2 column.

Tweakers 4, Mavs 1

A very entertaining 5 game set at the Hooverdome vs. Hal and his Mavs.

6/13 – Tweakers 11, Mavs 3.  Guthrie and MadBum both looked sharp at the outset, so the Hooverdome grounds crew tweaked the ventilation system to generate some offense.  J. Upton and Chili Davis went yard to give the Mavs a 2-0 lead, but the Tweakers then cranked out homers by Zobrist, Lind, Venable, and Lough – 2 by Lough, and he would have been a 3rd off Guthrie’s card but for the fact he is “weak”.  Dane de la Rosa gets the 3 inning save.  Mavs’ 3rd run was also via long-ball (Gattis).

6/14 – Mavs 8, Tweakers 4.  May have been the most enjoyable game of the series, with lots of chess moves, until Mavs broke it open late.  All 6 bench players for the Tweakers pinch-hit, and we ditched our DH, to no avail.  W – Bailey, L – Miller, S – Ross.

6/15 – Tweakers 1, Mavs 0.  Pitchers’ duel of Buchholz vs. Iwakuma did not disappoint.  Buchholz was removed after 6 innings, but Kuma threw 10 shutout innings (with no decision).  In the bottom of the 11th, Robbie Ross came in to throw one pitch to Shane Victorino.  Ball game.  Vulture victory to Scheppers.

8/26 – Tweakers 5, Mavs 4.  Guthrie vs. Bumgarner again.  Da Mavs struck first with a 4 run 2nd, but would not score again.  Meanwhile, Tweakers get 2 in the 3rd on another Victorino homer, and single runs in the 5th and 7th to tie it.  Bottom of the 9th, Zack Cozart is hit by a pitch with one out; Shane lays down a bunt and beats it out; and after a Byrd whiff, Captain Ben Zobrist comes through with a game-winning single off Ross.  W – Avilan, L – Doolittle.

8/27 – Tweakers 3, Mavs 1.  Bailey vs. Miller again.  Tweakers get 2 in the 1st on a bases-loaded walk and a sac fly.  Mavs get a run in the 2nd, then Venable homers in the bottom half to complete the scoring.  W – Miller, L – Bailey, S – Gray.

Warpigs 5, Goofs 0

The Goofs had some trouble scoring at the BallPork, getting outscored 37-2 in the 5 games.

Gm1 - Warpigs win 20-0. 20 runs on 23 hits, and Hyun-Jin Ryu was there for most of them. Stephen Strasburg (5-3) was pulled with a 12-0 lead after 5 innings. Yoenis Cespedes, Cody Ross, and Albert Pujols homered for the Pigs.

Gm2 - Warpigs win 3-0. A.J. Griffin held the Pigs to 2 hits, but both were homers on 5-8. Jose Fernandez (7-2) went the distance, allowing only 4 singles.

Gm3 - Warpigs win 8-1. The Goofs finally scored after 23.1 scoreless innings. Even that run almost didn't happen. The Goofs had the bases loaded with 1-out in the 6th and rolled ss-x, but Brandon Crawford couldn't turn the double play. Ryan Flaherty hit his first HR of the year. Zack Wheeler (2-5) got the win. His other win was against the Goofs at the Princess Palace. Ryu took another beating.

Gm4 - Warpigs win 3-1. It was the marquee match-up of Strasburg and Yu Darvish. Both starters gave up a home run, but the one off of Darvish came with 2 runners on. Michael Bourn pinch hit the 3-run homer with 2 outs in the 4th inning. Brett Lawrie stole 3 bases. Strasburg (6-3) got the win. Michael Wacha got his 3rd save. Shin-Soo Choo homered for the Goofs.

Gm5 - Warpigs win 3-0. Adam Wainwright (7-3) took a no-hitter into the 7th inning. Wacha got save 4. Austin Jackson went 3-4 with 2 triples.

Things You Thought Might Never Happen...

The Tweeners winning the World Series? Sure.

The Nads making the playoffs? It could happen.

But this?!? Never.

Buckeyes 3, DVs 2

Buckeyes and DVs finish up a series with just about every crazy thing that could happen as the Bucks win 3 of 5- games 1-3 @ Bucks and last 2 @ DVs.
Game 1 = DVs come from behind scoring 4 runs after the 7th inning to win 6-3
Game 2 = The craziness starts as DVs lead 10-1 after 3 innings, then hang on by their shoestring to win 11-10. We couldn’t get connected via the official netplay, so using the desktop sharing tool would have allowed an EQA – which the DVs almost suggested after the 4th inning. Not sure if that would or would not have been a good idea.
Game 3 = After the preceding fireworks, both teams struggle as the Buckeyes eke out a 1-0 win
Game 4 = Nothing like a 3-3 game in the third inning to keep your attention, unless it’s still 3-3 THIRTEEEN FREAKIN INNINGS LATER! Both teams had inserted their last pitchers (Johnson in the 11th for the Bucks, Ryan Cook in the 14th for the DVs), so in the 17th, the Buckeyes open the whole case of whoop ass, with 10 runs on 12 hits as the DVs sit by helplessly flickin’ the bean into oblivion as the Buckeyes win 13-3 in 17 innings. Cook’s ERA goes from 2.73 to 4.86 while Johnson pitches 6 innings without getting tired. Buckeyes total 26 hits on 74 at bats, while striking out 21 times and didn’t hit a homer, but David Ortiz did steal his second base of the series. Talk about Buckeye mystique. The box score said it lasted 5:15 – and that’s about what it felt like.
Game 5 = DVs just want to get the hell to bed with a 6-3 Buckeye win.

Mavs 2, DVs 0

Aug. 23rd  September call ups a week early.  Ozzie Smith had a quick hook for Latos as he left in the fifth having given up one run.  Addison Reed, Ozzie’s anointed successor, let the game get away giving up three runs including a squeeze bunt by old DV killer Elvis.  But the Chico’s Bail Bonds player of the game goes to Howard, not Howie, Kendrick.  HK47 goes 3 for 3 with 2 RBI.  Mavs win 5-1.

Aug. 24th:  Single to left M. Holliday couldn’t get it.  Moustakas chokes in the clutch.  Stop me if you heard it before.  Meanwhile the Mavs load the bases for Elvis.  Both managers are extremely frustrated.  Finally the Mavs break through with a 1-3 Upton triple with the bases loaded.  Ozzie Smith is heard swearing.  And Elvis is up again for the second straight inning with two runners in scoring position and two outs.  The Ghost of Bob Marley swears.  Leonys Martin misses a home run 1-9.  Ozzie Smith drinks a beer.  Bryce Harper hits a one out triple 1-4 fly.  Ozzie Smith calls for a bottle of Jack Daniels and a hooker.  Country Breakfast scores him on a Stanton X fly out.  Geovanny Soto scores on a two out single.  1-8 chance.  Ozzie Smith lights a crack pipe.  Justin Upton hits a 3 run 1-7 ballpark homer.  Ozzie Smith hunts for his Colt revolver.  Mavs win 9-0.  Upton wins the Betty’s Brothel Blow of the game (actually two) for the bases loaded triple and the three run homer.

Tweeners 3, Mavs 2

5/2:  The Tweeners miss four ballpark HR’s.  Mavs get one plus a 1-11 by Davis.  King Felix throws a 5-hitter and takes a loss.  The Chico’s Bail Bonds player of the game is Eggs Ackley, mostly so I could say that although he did have two of the five hits and turned a critical DP.  3-0 Mavs

5/3, Game 1 of the Day / Night Double Header because the Mavs are a small market team and need the revenue:  Zach Cozart in the clutch just isn’t a pretty site.  He strands two critical runners in the top of the second.  Meanwhile Marlin Byrd lets a double drop in and throws the ball into the stands and everyone scores.  Then Hal pulls Gio with two out in the second in a 3-2 game.  Will Venable chokes in the clutch in the fifth.  The Tweeners lack the will to win in game one.  Until the top of the ninth.  Ryan Howard hits a homer 1-9 fly off of Sean Doolittle.  And then as luck would have it, defensive replacement Eggs Ackley bats in the bottom of the tenth with the outfield in, the infield in and Sonny Gray calmly saying to himself “it’s only Dustin Ackley” and he gets him on a weak grounder.  Finally in the twelfth because of innings pitched problems the Mavs bring in Garrett Richards and end the game.  Howard wins the Betty’s Brothel Blow of the Game for the two out homer to tie the game in the top of the ninth.  6-5 Tweeners in 12.

5/3, Game 2:  The nightcap was a little more conventional.  Howard goes deep again.  Rat bastard.  But Evan Gattis does too and the Tweeners leave ten runners on base.  MadBum goes the distance in the loss.  I guess because Hal burned through five relievers in game one.  Chico’s Bail Bonds player of the game goes to Howard, not Howie, Kendrick who went two for four (both doubles) and turned in what Hal claimed was a web gem.  And no one argues with Hal.  6-3 Mavs

7/26:  In what was billed as a cruel mismatch in the local press, Jeremy Guthrie took the mound armed with his usual assortment of batting practice pitches against King Felix.  Yan Gomes hits a triple 1 in the fifth and Felix has all he needs.  Felix has 11 strikeouts through five innings.  The Mavs are checking media guides like crazy  14 through 6 innings, could a record be in the works?  Well no, because after two strikeouts in the seventh, King Felix walks three and Hal comes and gets him.  Throwing a 1 hitter with four walks at the time and the aforementioned 16 strikeouts.  No doubt who the player of the game is.  5-0 Tweeners

7/27:  Will Venable of the Tweeners finally gets a BP HR.  But Evan Gattis gets his second of the series.  And then Adam Lind gets one.  And Zobrist tags one off of Homer Allowed Bailey’s card but MadBum faltered and the Mavs rallied.  Tweeners suffered a two out Elvis triple driving in pinch runner Yovanni Gallardo.  In the top of the ninth the gutsy Tweeners hit a one out double.  Steal third and score on a squeeze play.  In the top of the 12th the Mavs have to bring in Robbie Ross for the previously discussed innings problem.  Escaping the 12th, Ross gets tired rather quickly in the 13th and now we’re down to Garrett Richards.  Richards almost escapes the jam but can’t get to a come backer and the Tweeners win as Richards walks in the lead run.  Ryan Howard gets three more hits and wins the Chico’s Bail Bonds player of the game.

Fungoes 5, DVs 2

The Fungoes cuff around the DiamondVision via netplay with a dominant all around performance.
First 3 at “Deadball Era Park at WTF” –
Game 1 – Fungoes win 8-1 as Perez and Quentin hit home runs as gravity was momentarily turned down while the home team batted.
Game 2 – DVs use 6 relievers to grind out a 4-1 win
Game 3 – Former (and eventually future) DV Kershaw and Cishek combine to 3 hit the hapless DVs 2-0. Interestingly the DV manager points out to Clayton that when he’s a DV, he’ll be allowed to get the complete game shutout. The congratulatory cake sent to the Fungoe clubhouse read: “Good luck in arbitration”
Next 2 at DV land
Game 4 – Home sweet home as the DVs score more runs by the 5th inning than they had to that point in the series, coasting to a 9-1 win
Game 5 – Pivotal game as a Murphy (David? Donnie? Dale? – who knows) doubles in the 12th for the tie breaking run, then a scratch single adds an insurance run for a 3-1 Fungoes win
Last 2 back at the Fungoes park which re-creates Saturn’s gravity level:
Game 6 – Omar Moreno and FP Santangelo throw out first pitches in a ceremony to pay homage to a team that will hit more triples than homers, as Fungoes sew it up by the 3rd inning as the demoralized DVs lose 6-2
Game 7 – In the “Get me the hell out of this place bobblehead give-away day” – Holland and 4 relievers shut down the DVs 2-0.
Fungoes start thinking about which wall to hang the Higdon on, while DVs stumble to 34-38 – YES the FFTs ARE still in it.

Buckeyes 4, Nads 1

Buckeyes take 4 of 5 in final games at Buckeyes.

Game 2 - Buckeyes 4 Nads 3 - Smoak and Rasmus homer for Buckeyes. Koji notches his 31st save in relief of Wood.

Game 3 - Buckeyes 7 Nads 6 - Yuni Escobar's 3 run HR in the 8th off Balfour was the difference. Nads made it interesting with a run in 9th but fall short.
Game 4 - Buckeyes 4 Nads 3 - Big Papi's 2 run single and ARods HR was the offense.
Game 5 - Buckeyes 10 Nads 9 - Buckeyes withstand a furious Nad rally as they score 3 in 8th and 4 in 9th to nearly come all the way back from 10-2 deficit. Koji has to come in and get the save. Lowrie has 4 hits and Big Papi drives in 4.

May 17th Goofs win 8-5 Span lead with 4 hits and Johnson ally-ooped 3 runs and Yu (not you) won.
May 18th Goofs win 6-0 Ryu had a 4 hit shut out. Alvarez knocked it out of the park.
May 19th Goofs win 5-1 Span had 3 hits. Castro drove in some good runs. Lohse win. Street saves.
Aug 11th Goofs win 4-1 Ryu wins again with Benoit getting the save. Span (who seems to be the Porkmaster this first half of the series) with another 2 hits. Ramirez drove in another 2 runs.
Aug 12th Pigs finally win 7-2 Wheeler comes back with a vengeance. Crawford & Molina each drove in 3 runs.

Zaps 4, Warpigs 1

Game 1- Wily Peralta shut out the Zaps and outpitched Max Scherzer through seven innings, but Chase Utley singled in a run to tie the game in the bottom of the 8th, and Miggy won it for the good guys with a solo shot in the 11th.

Games played via NetPlay.

4/3 @ The BallPork - Tweakers win 4-3. Ben Zobrist went 3-5 with a homer and a stolen base. The Warpigs came back from a 4-0 deficit to make it close, but couldn't complete the comeback. Gio Gonzalez got the win and Tanner Scheppers the save. Wily Peralta (2-7) took the loss.

Warpigs 1, FFTs 0

In the "Get me to 35 games" series, Stephen Strasburg and the Warpigs defeated Jeff Samardzija and the FFTs 3-1.

The FFTs scored in the first on yet another hit on an outfield-x. The Pigs scored 2 runs with 2 outs in the 6th. After the first two batters struck out, Yadier Molina singled and came all the way around to score on a double by Melky Cabrera. The throw from Jon Jay was cut to try and get Melky going for third (1-6), but the roll came up 4 and he was safe. Taking that base proved to be important when Melky then scored the go ahead run on a passed ball. Cody Ross homered off of Chris Capuano in the 7th for an insurance run. The FFTs loaded the bases in the 9th, but little-used Carlos Martinez came in to get Hunter Pence to bounce out to end the game. It was Martinez's first save.

Inmates 5, FFTs 5

FFTs 3 – Innmates 2 (Bapist Bowl): Inmates didn’t start threatening until Mariano entered the game. He got knocked out, but the LDMF lose.

Inmates 6 – FFTs 3 (Baptist Bowl): Cargo, Jones, and Beltre all tater for the Inmates. When they hit, we win. Simple.

FFTs 5 – Inmates 2 (Baptist Bowl): Pence, Freese, and Castillo tater for the FFTs. Leake allows three hits in 7 IP. Beltre distinguishes himself by making two errors on successive plays (not successive chances…plays).

Inmates 8 – FFTs 6 (BandBox): Ichiro hits a 3-run HR in the third to pull the FFTs ahead briefly, but Inmate lumber shows up as the Beakless Chicken Gang score 8 in three innings for the win.

FFTs 6 – Inmates 5 (BandBox): Ramos shows the world how to spontaneously combust. Leading 5-0 when he entered the game in the 6th with the bases loaded he tosses one pitch to Hill, who promptly hit it out of the county for a Grand Salami. No problem right? Inmates still lead 5-4. Until Pence comes up in the 7th with one on to chase a 69 mph Ramos fastball over the 593 foot sign in the Little League Park two miles away.

Inmates 8 – FFTs 2 (Baptist Bowl): A five-run Inmate 3rd off of Kuroda is all that was needed for the win.

Inmates 9 – FFTs 4 (Baptist Bowl): Four Inmates homered to lead the Baptist Bowl Choralaires into a frenzy of wishful thinking and a two game winning streak.

FFTs 6 – Inmates 4 (BandBox): Prince Fielder’s 3-run spud in the third put the FFTs ahead forever. Masterson and Rivera shut down the Inmate offense late.

FFTs 7 – Inmates 6 (11 Innings – BandBox): The Inmate Arson Squad is in top incendiary form. Grilli enters the game in the 9th ahead 6-5, only to walk two and allow a hit without recording an out (this earned a BS – blew himself – for the stat sheet). Simon holds things in check until receiving a text message from his squeeze du jour that his presence was required immediately. Always the obliging boyfriend, he tosses a meat-pitch to Fielder with two outs in the 11th to throw away the game.

Inmates 6 – FFTs 2 (BandBox): Cargo, Beltre, and Jones all homer. See game 2 description.

Sidewinders 4, Warpigs 1

Played via NetPlay.

Gm 1 @ Stanley Stadium - Sidewinders win 5-4 in 10 innings. David Wright hit a 2-out, 2-run single off of Casey Fien in the bottom of the 10th for the win. Brandon Crawford had homered in the top of the inning off of Aroldis Chapman to give the Pigs the lead. Melky Cabrera hit a 2-out, 2-run homer in the top of the 9th off of Craig Kimbrel to tie the game. Chapman got the win. Nick Tepesch (0-1) took the loss.

Gm 2 @ Stanley Stadium - Warpigs win 5-3. The Snakes led 2-1 into the 8th when the Pigs put together a rare rally. Alejandro De Aza homered to tie the game, and then Yoenis Cespedes blasted a 3-run shot to put the game out of reach. Adam Wainwright (3-2) went 7 for the win. Tyler Lyons recorded his first save. Somebody named Cody Allen - who won the right to suit up and play in a pre-game drawing among the paying customers - took the loss in relief.

Gm 3 @ The BallPork - Sidewinders win 7-5. Every Snake hit in this game (and in the SERIES!) came on chances of 1-4 or less. The Snakes had FIVE HITS on ss-x chances, and he is a 2, for cryin' out loud! David Wright homered twice (the first was HR 1-2, fly; the second was HR 1-4, fly - I ain't lyin'). The gritty Warpigs made it interesting with three in the 8th and two more in the 9th, but overcoming Kimbrel was too much to handle - especially for the league's worst hitting team. Jon Lester got the win.

Gm 4 @ The BallPork - Sidewinders win 1-0. Jake Peavy, Chapman, and Kimbrel were masterful, combining on a 1-hit shutout. The one hit, a single by Albert Pujols in the 5th, was followed immediately by a ss-x roll. Jhonny Peralta, A FUCKING FOUR, turned the 6-4-3 double play. The Snake run scored in the 8th when the 2e3 in CF for the Pigs let a ball drop for a single. Stephen Strasburg (2-3) struck out 10 in 7 innings, but took the loss.

Gm 5 @ The BallPork - Sidewinders win 2-1. Whatever. May luck continue to be with you when you play the DVs. May you forget to not trust a fart. May you fall into your brother's bush (again).

Warpigs 3, Drillers 2

All games played at the BallPork via NetPlay.

Game 1 - Drillers win 5-1 in 10 innings. Jose Fernandez had a 1-0 lead in the 9th when leftfielder Yoenis Cespedes (2e6) let a flyball drop for a single AND let it roll past him for a 2-base error, sending the tying run to 3rd. Brandon Belt immediately singled the runner home to tie the game. The Drillers, so glad Fernandez was gone, pounded reliever Tommy Milone (0-3) in the 10th. Ivan Nova threw three innings of shutout relief to get the win.

Game 2 - Warpigs win 3-2 in 11 innings. Alejandro De Aza hit a double off of Joe Nathan, driving in the winning run in the 11th. Michael Wacha (1-0), the 5th reliever of the game for the Pigs, got the win. Nova took the loss.

May 9 – Buckeyes 3, Tweakers 1.  2-run 1st inning homer by Ortiz off Shelby Miller and we never recovered.  Dickey the win, Uehara the save.
May 10 – Tweakers 1, Buckeyes 0.  Buckeyes leave the bases loaded in the first, then load them again with no outs in the 6th, but Escobar's attempted squeeze is popped up into a DP.  David Lough drives in the game's only run off Wandy.  Gio gets the win, with 4 innings of help from Scheppers and Avilan.

DVs 2, Warpigs 2

All games played at The BallPork via NetPlay (which, by the way, went off without a hitch).

Game 1 - DVs win 6-4. The DVs start a 4-game stretch of hitting EVERY SINGLE CHANCE OF 1-7 OR LESS. NEVER MISSED ONE. I SHIT YOU NOT. Each team hit 3 homers, with the DVs getting the long ball from Matt Holliday, Mike Moustakas, and Ian Kinsler; and the Pigs getting a homer from Yadier Molina and two from Yoenis Cespedes, who didn't even enter the game until the 7th inning. Andrew Cashner went 6 innings for the win, easily outdueling Steven Strasburg (2-2).

Game 2 - Warpigs win 6-4. The DVs picked right up where they left off with two homers off of Jose Fernandez in the first two innings to go up 4-1, but a rare Pig offensive explosion in the bottom of the 2nd gave the good guys the lead for good. Austin Jackson did the honors with a 2-out, 3-run homer off of Jered Weaver. D.J. Lemahieu added an insurance homer in the 7th. Fernandez (5-1) got last inning help from Casey Fien, who induced a double play from the only batter he faced - pinch hitter Ramiro Pena - to end the game.

Game 3 - DVs win 1-0. Mat Latos, who can't possibly be this good, took a perfect game into the 5th and a no-hitter into the 7th. He allowed only a solid double to Yadier Molina in the complete game shutout. For the Warpigs, Adam Wainwright was busy throwing a different kind of shutout. When J.J. Hardy homered in the 7th (on a BP 1-4 roll!), it was the 10th hit for the DVs, but the first (and only) run. An example of Wainwright's night: With the game still scoreless in the 5th inning, Ian Kinsler led off with a ballpark single (1-2, of course). Hardy was called on to bunt him over, and beat it out for a hit. So now Leonys Martin tried to bunt, and he ALSO beat it out for a hit, loading the bases with no outs. Wainwright then strikes out both Allen Craig and Justin Morneau before getting Matt Holliday to pop up to end the inning. It was that kind of night.

Game 4 - Warpigs win 4-3. Coming into this game, Pig starter Wily Peralta had made 5 starts, going 0-5, and had had 7 total runs scored behind him. So when Michael Bourn tripled and scored in the first, Peralta was pretty pumped. So much so, that he flirted with a no-hitter/perfect game of his own for a few innings. J.J. Hardy, the 17th batter Peralta faced ended the quest for perfection with another home run (HR 1-7, fly). And when Justin Morneau clubbed a 2-run shot the following inning, the DVs had tied the game at 3 and put Peralta's bid for his first win in jeopardy. But a rare homer by Alejandro De Aza in the bottom of the 7th reclaimed the lead for the Pigs. Michael Wacha got the last out for his first ever save.

Tweeners 8, FFTs 2

Start with a 2 game set at FFTs:
4/8 – Tweeners 7, FFTs 1.  Top of the 2nd, none on and 2 out, Napoli boots a grounder, and Tweeners go on to score 5 in the inning.  Iwakuma the win, Perez takes the loss.
4/9 – Tweeners 4, FFTs 1.  Top of the 6th, tie game, 2 outs, Lind on first, Howard doubles into the corner.  We wave Lind home 1-12, Hal opts to throw out the trailing Howard and allows what will be the winning run to score.  Felix outpitches Hiroki.  Ichiro pinch runs in the 8th, stays in to play 3B in the 9th.
then 3 at The Hooverdome:
5/20 – Tweeners 3, FFTs 0.  FFTs outhit us 7-5, but MadBum and friends combine for the shutout.  An 8th inning 2-run homer by the Panda gave us some breathing room.  Quality start/loss for Mike Leake.
5/21 – Tweeners 3, FFTs 1.  With one out in the 8th, Pence is on 2nd, and Napoli is the tying run at the plate.  CF(X), Venable makes the catch, Pence attempts to advance on the F2 and is called out at 3rd.  Iwakuma evens his record at 4-4, Scheppers records his 2nd save.  Hal says Hellickson's record is now 0-10, and he hasn't even heard about those Snakes' games.
5/22 – Tweeners 10, FFTs 2.  FFTs take an early 2-0 lead, Tweeners get 3 in the 4th, then we bust it open in the 5th, starting with a BP HR for Venable (requires the 1 in the Hooverdome), and capped by a Panda grand slam (he also rolled a 1, although it was a 1-7 chance).  Gio over Hiroki.
Tweeners head back on the road:
7/1 – FFTs 4, Tweeners 2.  FFTs finally break through, thanks to a Fielder 3-run homer in the first.  Tweeners only managed 3 hits, but threatened a couple of times, and had the tying run at the plate in the 9th, but Mariano nailed it down.  Hiroki over Hisashi.
7/2 – Tweeners 6, FFTs 0.  MadBum and friends again with the combined shutout, Panda 3 for 4 with a HR, Byrd drives in 3.  Samardzija didn't have his best stuff.
7/3 – Tweeners 2, FFTs 1.  Gio Gonzalez(3-1) and Mike Leake(0-9) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with Gonzalez and the NORM TWEENERS coming out on top of the pitiful TERRY FFT'S 2 to 1.

TERRY was unable to climb back into it after NORM went ahead for good in the
2nd inning plating one baserunner.  Homers by Adam Lind and Nelson Cruz led to the Tweeners victory.  Luis Avilan was perfect in relief and got
the save, his 1st.

With the win NORM now has a record of 19-14.  TERRY continued their losing ways and their record is now 11-47, worst in the division.  They are 1-9 in their last ten games.

then back home:

8/13 – FFTs 7, Tweeners 6.  Tweeners take a 5-2 lead into the 9th, but Schep gets torched for 4 runs.  Tweeners then get 1 in the bottom half to force overtime.  TERRY ended up winning
it in the 13th inning.  After two were out Ichiro Suzuki tripled.  Welington
Castillo next to the plate and he drew a walk.  Martin Prado then lined a
base-hit.  NORM had 18 hits in the game while TERRY had 14, but TERRY had the
more timely hits.

Vin Mazzaro(2-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Drew
Smyly(1-1) was the loser in relief.  For TERRY the victory was a welcome one,
indeed.  They had been struggling in their last ten games with a
disappointing 2-8 record.  With the loss NORM now has a record of 19-15.

8/14 – Tweeners 7, FFTs 5.  In a tight game it was the NORM TWEENERS 7, the lifeless TERRY FFT'S 5 at The Hooverdome.

NORM scored 4 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 5 hits.  They would
prove to be the difference in the contest.  NORM banged out 13 hits on the
afternoon.

Sergio Romo(1-0) went 2 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Romo
was helped out by Sonny Gray who recorded his 7th save.  Mike Leake(0-10) was
the losing pitcher.  He pitched 6 innings giving up 9 hits and 1 walk.

Inmates 3, Goofs 2

Not via netplay (as usual, SOM problems with getting hooked up) or F-T-F, but Teamviewer:

GOOFS 3 – INMATES 1 (Baptist Bowl): Goofs make 3 errors, Inmates get 8 hits, but Parker gives up a three-run tater to Tor2 in a singularly unexciting game.

INMATES 6 – GOOFS 4 (Baptist Bowl): Beltre taters twice off of Darvish, and Cargo hit a grand salami for all the Inmate runs. The bullpen tries to implode in the 9th, but doesn’t (!).

INMATES 3 – GOOFS 2 (10 Innings – Baptist Bowl): A Beltre homer in the 9th with one out off of Benoit sends the game to extra innings. Benoit completes the meltdown in the 10th as Pierzynski doubles home Parra with one out for the game winner.

INMATES 5 – GOOFS 3 (11 Innings – GoofyDome): Darvish continues to have trouble with the long ball, giving up HRs to Drew and Rizzo. Cargo hits a two-run shot in the 11th off of Street for the winner.

GOOFS 10 – INMATES 3 (GoofyDome): The Goofmen bring out the big artillery and blast Stults. Johnson hits a slammer, and the Inmates roll over and take it in the poop chute.
