Playoff Pairings Set

With the Drillers' 8-2 series win against the lowly Wahoos, the playoff match-ups are set.

In the first round, the Fungoes (6) will square off against their old friend (and future divisional foe), the Rhinos (3).

In the other first round series, the AWD champion Tweeners (4) will face the Drillers (5).

In the second round, the Buckeyes (2), who won the MFD, will face either the Rhinos or the winner of the LCT/OUD series.

The overall best record belongs to the DVs (1), who will face either the Fungoes or the winner of the LCT/OUD series.

The games will be played at WTF Field on December 1-2.

Could this finally be the Year of the Tweeners? Could the Rhinos finally find a way to win with THE GREATEST LINEUP IN THE HISTORY OF NASOMA? Could the Buckeyes somehow find a way to win another title? Could the Fungoes shock everyone by beating the Rhinos and Buckeyes back to back to reach the Series and win their second title? Could the Drillers add to their list of championship years? Could the DVs finally allow their bean to be flicked by someone else?

The answer to one of these six questions is YES. But which one?

Good luck to all. (Okay, that's a lie. Good luck to everyone except the Drillers and Buckeyes - they've won enough already.)

Killer Bees 4, Tweeners 3

With the Tweeners' magic number at 2, one win over the visiting Bees would clinch the AWD title. We could not get it done in game #1, as Cueto allowed only 4 hits, Motte got a 2-inning save, Bees won 4-1. The champagne was still properly chilled for the clincher, which came in game #2. Hal was unimpressed, reporting that Ivan Nova(9-4) contributed a pedestrian performance to earn the win. He went 5 and 1/3 innings surrendering 5 hits and 1 walk. For manager George Brett and the Logan County faithful it was a thing of beauty. Victorino homered, the Panda tripled, the 2-inning save went to Romo, and the Tweeners rode 11 hits, 5 walks, and 3 HBPs to a 6-2 victory. Go crazy, Folks! Go crazy!! The momentum carried over to wins in game #3 (Gio over Verlander 10-2) and game #4 (MadBum over Cueto 6-2). We lost focus for games 5-6-7, losing by scores of 3-1, 5-2, and 5-4. Tweeners will use the final 3 games vs. DVs to set up the rotation for a round 1 series vs. the Fungrillers (or Drillgoes).

We would also be remiss if we failed to acknowledge the accomplishments of several Giant Tweeners in the recently completed MLB World Series. Tweeners pitchers earned the win in 2 of the 4 games, along with 3 saves, including both win and save in the game 4 clincher. On the offensive side it was a Tweener who drove in the winning run in the final game (same guy who was NLCS MVP), and yet another Tweener named WS MVP. May their mojo propel us in the NASOMA playoffs. As the Giants have proven twice in 3 years, shit can happen.

(Editor's note: Along the "shit can happen" vein, there is still a chance that the Killer Bees could make the playoffs. Now THAT would be funny.)

Wahoos 3, Mavs 2

Nothing was reported (shock!), but I do know that this means at least THREE teams finished tied at 76-86. Our commissioner will have his hands full on the tiebreaker rules.

DVs 3, Tweeners 0

Tweeners don’t let a starter go past 5 innings as the DVs sweep the last 3 games at home. In scores not to be confused with tennis, the DVs win 6-5, 6-5 and 6-4.

 

The DVs have clinched the #1 seed for the playoffs.

I played the games at Fungoville and was short on time so I don't have any write-ups or game-by-game scores.

Rhinos 3, Fungoes 2

Fungoes and Rhinos completed the season today with a five game set. All games were played at WTF.

Game 1:

Fungoes win game 1, 5-3 behind Price and a strong bullpen. Price gets the win and Papelbon picks up his 32nd save of the season. Cecil takes the loss for the Rhinos.

Game 2:

Fungoes win again 3-1. Myers picks up the win. The loss goes to Matt Garza. Papelbon picks up his 33rd save of the season. Zimmerman drives in all 3 runs for the Fungoes.

Game 3:

Kershaw takes a no-hitter into the 8th inning but allows a run and that turns out to be the lone run of the game as the Rhinos win it 1-0. Beckett gets the win and Jansen picks up the save. Kershaw is the hard luck loser for the Fungoes.

Game 4:

Rhinos score a run in the 10th to win another close one 2-1. Beckett picks up the win while Chisek loses it in relief.

Game 5:

Rhinos close out the season with a 6-0 win over the Fungi. Cecil gets the complete game shutout while Kershaw takes the loss for the Fungoes.

Fungoes finish out the season 81-81.

Inmates 4, Nads 3

Game 1 - Jhoulys Chacin pitched 9 strong innings and Jimmy Paredes collected 2 extra-base hits as the INMATES bested the NADS 10 to 4

Game 2 - Gavin Floyd dominated striking out 11 NADS and designated hitter Jose Altuve had 3 base hits as the INMATES defeated the NADS by the score of 6 to 2

Game 3 - Shaun Marcum threw a 2 hit game and right fielder Jason Kubel went

deep and had 3 RBI as the NADS beat the INMATES 6 to 0.

Game 4 - Cliff Pennington had 2 base hits at Kauffman Stadium where the INMATES beat the NADS 3 to 2. The INMATES out-hit the NADS 8 to 5.

Game 5 - Jhoulys Chacin(4-0) and Doug Fister(9-13) treated the fans to a fine

pitching duel.  The INMATES eventually emerged as victors over the NADS by the score of 2 to 1.

Game 6 - C.J. Wilson had a complete game as the NADS beat the INMATES 8 to 3.

 Wilson(11-11) pitched well, He went 9 innings allowing 6 hits and 3 walks.

Game 7 - Jason Kubel hit 2 doubles and Shaun Marcum had an impressive outing as the NADS defeated the INMATES by a score of 3 to 2

Nads 4, Mavs 3

Game 1 – NAD fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.  Shaun Marcum(10-9) finally bested his TAD opposite, Matt Cain(2-5), by the score of 2 to 1.

Game 2 - Erick Aybar collected 2 extra-base hits and had 2 RBI as the NADS beat the MAVS by the score of 6 to 5. Josh Collmenter(8-7) pitched okay, well enough for the win.  He went 6 innings and gave up 9 hits and 1 walk.  After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.  

Game 3 - Yorvit Torrealba had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the MAVS outscored the NADS 4 to 2. Jake Arrieta(2-0) pitched well for the victory.  He allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings 

Game 4 – The MAVS were battered 8 to 3 by the NADS. C.J. Wilson had  a solid outing.  He was reached for 6 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings.  The Nads had 9 hits for the afternoon while the Mavs had 6. The losing pitcher was Homer Bailey(2-1). 

Game 5 -  Matt Cain was on top of his game, blanking the NADS on just 2 hits as the MAVS defeated the NADS 2 to 0

Game 6 - NADS toppled the MAVS by a 5 to 1 score. Josh Collmenter(9-7) looked very much in control throughout the day.  He allowed only 4 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 2/3 innings.

Game 7 - First baseman Casey Kotchman had 2 base hits as the MAVS beat the NADS 2 to 1.

Tweeners 4, Killer Bees 3

Tweeners take 4 of 7 at the Hive. Couldnt have been much tighter...

DVs take the 5 games at The Reservation in a hard fought series, here are the scores:

Game 1 – 12-6 (Weaver wins his 22nd)

#2 – 3-2 (Ogando goes to 20-2)

#3 – 12-10 (DVs almost blow a 12-2 lead)

#4 – 16-3

#5 – 4-3 (Wahoos grab an early lead that the DVs chip away at, then hold on)

Inmates 4, Nads 3

All games at the Baptist Bowl:

INMATES 6 – NADS 5: The Inmates scored all of their runs in the 4^th and held on for an uninspiring win. Bastard-o K’s the side in the 9^th for the save (sandwiched around a walk and a hit…).

NADS 6 – INMATES 2: Marcum tosses a complete game and Willingham taters twice to ice the game. Wells homered for the LDMF.

NADS 6 – INMATES 3: Wells homers twice more, but Inmates suck. Nads manage only one single for the entire game…but also have 7 doubles and another Willingham homer.

INMATES 7 – NADS 4: Largest crowd of the series to date, as 434 drunken and mentally handicapped weirdos show up to watch a ho-hum affair won by the Inmates, only because the Nads weren’t interested enough to play with much intensity.

NADS 4 – INMATES 3: Marcum pitched a no-hitter for 6 2/3 innings, when Willingham fell on his ass chasing a routine fly ball and allowed Jones to triple. Inmates don’t score until the 9^th when Howard homers.

INMATES 6 – NADS 5 (11 innings): Hanigan gets 10^th-inning bases-loaded single with everyone in to put the game into the win column for the Inmates. Billingsley held the Nads hitless until Weeks homered on the first pitch of the game.

INMATES 6 – NADS 2: Good pitching by De la Rosa and a homer by Pennington (!?!) and the Inmates win.

Extra Reserve Pick Contest Update

It's come down to the final day. The Snakes lead the Zaps by 1 win going into today, and they also own the tie-breaker. For the Zaps to win, this has to happen...

All four wins are needed for the Zaps to win. If any of them don't happen, the Snakes are the winners.

Snakes win the first four. Zaps come back to win the last three.

Killer Bees 3, Wahoos 2

Wahoos win Game 1, 11-8. Bees jumped to an 8-1 lead but the bullpen fell apart giving up homers to Werth and Tex. Paulino threw 3 spotless innings of relief for the win.

Bees win Game 2, 10-7. Wahoos blew the lead this time as Samardjiza and Mujica coughed up a 6-run 8th inning. After highlighting pregame festivities with a tantalizing rendition of the national anthem, Carlos Santana hit a grand slam.

Bees win Game 3, 16-6. Lots of runs early. 18 more hits for the Bees. How does anybody consistently get this team out?

Wahoos win Game 4, 6-4. Chris Ianetta broke a 4-4 tie with a walk-off 2-run homer off Farnsworth. Wahoos led most of the way until the Bees tied it in the top of the ninth.

Bees win, 9-3. 13 more hits. Ian Kennedy went the distance and had 10 strike outs.

Bees outscore the Wahoos, 47-33, in the series. Bees hit .378 with 10 homers. But the 6.91 ERA wasn't so great. Wahoos hit .278 with 9 homers. And a 9.40 ERA.
