Made the long drive down to Waco today. Got to watch the Baptist Bowl Choralairs sing "Sit on My Face." Got to see George and Gracie. Got to win 5. Got to lose 5. Rolling dice at the Baptist Bowl is not a bad way to spend a Saturday.
Gm 1 (Baptist Bowl) - Warpigs win 4-2. Mike Minor goes 7 innings for the win. Mark Melancon got the save. Omar Infante homered for the Pigs. Carlos Gonzalez homered for the Inmates.
Gm 2 (Baptist Bowl) - Warpigs win 5-1. Erik Bedard went 8. Bedard and three relievers held the Inmates to 4 hits. Melancon got the save again. Dustin Ackley and Cameron Maybin homered for the Pigs, resulting in complete and utter embarrassment for the Inmate staff.
Gm 3 (The BallPork) - Warpigs win 5-3. Blake Beavan went 7 for the win with Melancon saving his 3rd straight game. The Pigs got homers from Jeff Francouer, Geovanny Soto, and Maybin.
Gm 4 (The BallPork) - Warpigs win 3-2 in 11 innings. In a game no one wanted, the Warpigs eeked out their 4th consecutive win. The Pigs had 11 baserunners in the last 4 innings, but didn't score any of them until Freddie Freeman drew a bases loaded, 2-out walk to end it. Omar Infante hit a 2-run homer in the 3rd inning, but the real story was the Mike Minor no-hit bid. Minor kept his perfect game going thru the first 17 batters before issuing a 6th inning walk. He lost the no-hitter after 1 out in the 7th. The shutout was still intact with 2 outs in the 9th when Kosuke Fukudome got a single 1-4 off of Mark Rzepczynski's card to keep the game alive. Adrian Beltre then hit a 2-run homer to tie the game. The LDMF's had only 5 hits, and all of them were by the 3 & 4 spots in the lineup.
Gm 5 (Baptist Bowl) - Inmates win 4-3. The ImpotentMates began to perk up, scoring the tying run in the 8th and the winning run on a bases loaded, walk off HBP in the 9th.
Gm 6 (Baptist Bowl) - Inmates win 11-8. Ugggggg Leeee. The two teams combined for 27 hits. The Inmates scored 4 times in the 8th, the last three coming on a 3-run double by Brian Bogusevic.
Gm 7 (Baptist Bowl) - Inmates win 3-1. Chad Billingsley gave up a lead off homer to Stephen Drew, then allowed pretty much nothing else.
Gm 8 (The BallPork) - Inmates win 5-3. I have no idea what happened in this game. We lost. That was enough. I think Billingsley pitched again. Series now tied 4-4.
Gm 9 (The BallPork) - Warpigs win 9-2. Edinson Volquez won his first game of the year. Dillon Gee went 4 innings of 1-hit ball for the save. Seriously, if Volquez and Gee can shut you down, you don't deserve to win.
Gm 10 (The BallPork) - Inmates win 9-1. I throw Volquez in game 9, and the Inmates can't hit. I throw Jeremy Hellickson in game 10, and they kick his ass. This is a weird game. The Inmates pounded 4 homers (in fairness, only 1 was off of Hellickson). Jhoulys Chacin looked like Cy Chacin. And frankly, if Chacin can shut you down, you don't deserve to win.
There were lots of fun stuff, too. The Inmates had an inning in game 5 that started triple, single, double... but they only scored 1 run, didn't attempt a steal, and left no one on base. The batter who singled was thrown out trying to score on the double. The runner who doubled was then doubled off third on a flyball-x to the outfield that resulted in a rare play. In the 11th inning of game 4, the Warpigs went walk, walk, sac, intentional walk, and then Ackley pinch hit and had a single 1-16 shot to end the game. Missed it. Then Freeman drew the 2-out walk. In game 8, Mike Leake pinch ran, and then stayed in to pitch the 9th. I've never had that happen before. In the bottom of the 9th inning in that game, the Pigs had 3 starting pitchers on the bench who could not legally play. There was no dh to hit/run for, and no bench players left to cover any positions. Cliff Pennington homered twice in the final game. It was that kind of day.

Computerized HAL
Computerized HAL sucks. As long as there has been a computer baseball SOM (and as much fun as Strato is), I still can’t believe that the game has so many glitches in its software that computers crash left and right . Of course, it’s not the game’s fault, but all of us uneducated and uneducable boobs who insist upon using our personal computers for other software applications besides the baseball game (you know, Windows and stuff like that).
After playing several netplay games between the LDMF and the Buckeyes, the Shriveled Testicle Gang’s computer became inoperable due to an SOM error, resulting in a trip to the PC infirmary.
Two or three years ago the Inmates had the same thing happen, except that our hard drive fried. Several of you have had similar malfunctions.
When the initial 2012 game patch came out, I had problems downloading the damned thing. An email to the PC-heads at SOM has resulted in no response – not even the usual snide comment about how I must be a total nitwit regarding computer operation.
Soooo…a SOM baseball wish: Long live the game and its creator. May we continue to have fun playing SOM baseball forever. And may the rectum-heads who do the computer programming for it have HAL roll “20” on every 1-19 HR chance when they play; may their beer always be flat; may their women always be ugly and bitchy; may their music always be rap – at least until they get their collective shit together.

BUCKEYES 7 – INMATES 5 (Baptist Bowl): Heisey hits 3-run tater and Inmates are down 4-0 before ever coming to bat. HRs by Suzuki and Howard, along with an error by Escobar, allow the Inmates to get close but not close enough.
BUCKEYES 6 – LDMF 0 (Baptist Bowl): Beachy allows three hits – HRs to Ortiz, C. Jones, and Heisey – as both teams get only 5 hits. Inmates suck.
BUCKEYES 10 – LDMF 5 (Baptist Bowl): Shriveled Testicle Gang scores 6 in the first off of limp-dicked Chacin and never look back.
BUCKEYES 5 – LDMF 1 (Buckeye Dome): Heisey reams Beakless again with another HR and 3B; LDMF hitters miss two ballpark homers (but it wouldn’t have made any difference in the result because the LDMF are homos and the Buckeyes cheat).
BUCKEYES 6 – LDMF 5 (Buckeye Dome): Billingsley is bitch-slapped again, allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 4 2/3. Dickweed Ortiz thinks his sphincteral emanations lack odoriferousness because he hits three doubles and gets 4 RBI.

Official Scoring
There are several things that bother me about scoring rules, and here are two that have been on my mind lately.
First, the one that says a runner took 2nd (or 3rd) on "defensive indifference." The guy stole a base - he should get a stolen base. It's not his fault the defense was indifferent. And while we're at it, I hate it when the defense is indifferent. If the score is out of hand, that's fine. I still disagree with the strategy, but I understand the thinking. But if the score is 3-1 in the 9th and the leadoff batter gets on, why just give him 2nd base? Wouldn't you rather keep the double play as a possibility. But it happens all the time. Now, if the guy wants to steal 2nd in a 12-1 game, it should still be a SB, but one that comes with some sort of retaliation down the road.
Anyway, the strategy is not my point here. It's the scoring decision to not give a stolen base. I think the runner should be rewarded for taking the base. Screw the indifference. If you don't want SBs added to the stats of your pitchers and catchers, stop being indifferent.
The other scoring decision that bothers me is the one that says, "you can't assume a double play." Why can't you? Runner on first, grounder to 2nd, and the ss drops the ball during transition. If the scorer can determine it would have been an easy DP, give the ss an error. The pitcher earned the DP, and the shortstop screwed it up. The other day I saw a ss field a grounder, step on the bag and then throw the ball in the dirt past the firstbaseman. The runner would have been out by several strides. The ball didn't leave the field of play, so the batter couldn't advance past 1st, but he SHOULD have been out. Bad throw. Error. Except, no, you can't assume a double play. Stupid rule.
And I've never looked it up, but... IS it a rule? Or just one of those unwritten rules?

Gm 1 - Rhinos win 4-2. Cano, Tulo, and Avila go back-to-back-to-back in the 4th inning to lead the attack. Tim Hudson gets the win, Axford the save.
Gm 2 - Rhinos win 14-5. Now this is more like what we expected. The Rhinos get a 6-run 5th inning and a 7-run 9th. Kemp goes 4-5 with a triple, a homer, and a stolen base. Alex Gordon gets 3 hits, including a homer. C.C. Sabathia didn't last long enough to get the win, departing after 2 innings and trailing 5-0.

Rhinos 5, Warpigs 2
The Warpig hurlers held the powerful Rhino offense to 24 runs in 7 games but couldn't get any offense of their own going. The Rhinos swept the final 4 games at Rhino Park with 4 straight walk-off wins. The scores of those four games were 3-2, 3-2, 3-2, and 3-1..
Gm 1 - Rhinos win 5-2. The Rhinos staked Tim Hudson to a 4-0 lead with a 4-spot in the 3rd. A 2-run homer by Mike Moustakas was all the Pigs could manage.
Gm 2 - Warpigs win 6-5. Hanley Ramirez homered twice off of C.C. Sabathia, but it took an rbi single by Dustin Ackley in the bottom of the 9th off the lefty Sean Marshall to get the walk-off win.
Gm 3 - Warpigs win 4-2. Blake Beavan held the Rhinos to 1 run thru six innings, but left trailing 1-0. It was still 1-0 when the Pigs exploded for 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th. Mike Moustakas hit a 2-run homer in the rally.
Gm 4 - Rhinos win 3-2. The series moved to Rhino Park. The Rhinos again led 1-0 in the 8th when pinch hitter Brett Lawrie smacked a 2-run triple to give the Warpigs the lead. Robinson Cano answered with a 2-run, walk-off triple in the bottom of the 9th for the win.

Gm 6 - Rhinos win 3-2. The Rhinos win by the same score for the 3rd straight game, and all 3 were won in their final at bat. Alex Avila's ballpark (HR 1-5) homer in the bottom of the 9th ended the game. Jordan Zimmermann went the distance in the loss.
Gm 7 - Rhinos win 3-1 in 12 innings. A great outing by Blake Beavan was wasted. Beavan went 7 innings and allowed only 2 hits, but 1 of them was a game-tying homer to Matt Kemp in the 7th inning. The Rhinos won in the 12th when Joey Votto homered off of Dillon Gee. The homer was only the third hit of the game for the Rhinos. The losing pitcher was Mark Melancon, who went 3 innings without allowing a hit or a walk. He exited the game after Cameron Maybin dropped a ball for a 2-base error to lead off the 12th.

Drillers 6, Warpigs 4
The Drillers moved back into the race for the lead in the HWD by manhandling the Pigs in a Netplay series.
Gm 1 - Drillers win 13-2. The Driller bats pounded Mike Minor and two relievers for 18 hits. James Shields threw 6 innings of 3-hit shutout before Scott Baker came on for the 3-inning save, allowing only a 2-run homer to Jeff Francoeur. Jacoby Ellsbury had 3/4 of the cycle by the 4th inning, but couldn't get the double in the next three at bats.
Gm 2 - Drillers win 6-5. A closer game, but the same result. For the second game in a row, three different Drillers homered. Dan Haren got the win over Erik Bedard. Cristhian Martinez recorded the save. Freddy Freeman went 4-4 for the Pigs.
Gm 3 - Drillers win 5-3. The next 5 games move to Driller Park. The Drillers exploded with a 2-out, 3-run rally in the bottom of the 8th inning for the win. Bill Bray got the win in relief while Martinez got another save.
Gm 4 - Drillers win 7-2. Ricky Romero goes all the way for the win. Paul Konerko hits 2 homers. Blake Beavan gets hit hard early but manages to throw a complete game.
Gm 5 - Warpigs win 7-2. The bottom of the Pig lineup scores 5 runs in the 2nd inning, capped off with a 3-run homer by Cameron Maybin. Mike Minor gets the complete game win. Brandon McCarthy takes the loss.
Gm 6 - Warpigs win 9-3. The Pigs beat up on James Shields, and Erik Bedard goes 5 for the win. Mike Leake gets a 4-inning save.
Gm 7 - Drillers win 9-3. The Warpigs' effort to get back into the series with the Drillers ended the moment Edinson Volquez was announced starter. On the plus side, Volquez only allowed 2 hits in his 3.2 innings. The bad news is, both were homers AND he managed to walk 7. Asdrubal Cabrera homered twice and drove in 5.
Gm 8 - Drillers win 5-3. Back in Hooterville for the final 3 games, the Drillers hit 4 solo homers. Bray gets another win in relief, and Martinez gets another save.
Gm 9 - Warpigs win 7-6. Ricky Romero fails to get an out in the 3rd inning, thanks in part to a 3-run homer by Geovanny Soto. Mike Minor gets the win, but watching this bullpen hang on to the lead was excruciating. The Drillers scored in the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th innings. Jason Hammel got the save.
Gm 10 - Warpigs win 7-6. In the bottom of the 1st, Stephen Drew led off with a homer, and 1 batter later, Dustin Ackley hit his first homer of the year, a 2-run shot. But the 3-0 Pig lead was gone by the 7th. Trailing 6-3 in the 7th, the first three Pigs reached base, loading them up with no outs. Brett Lawrie came on to pinch hit against Joe Nathan but was retired on a weak popout to shallow left. John Mayberry then pinch hit for Omar Infante against Brian Fuentes but struck out. That brought up Ackley against the lefty, and since Infante had been hit for, Ackley could not be removed. No problem, he just rolled 2-4 to take the lefty deep for a grand slam. Mark Rzepczynski and Dillon Gee somehow managed to not get scored on in the 8th or 9th for the win.
Gm 1 - Drillers win 13-2. The Driller bats pounded Mike Minor and two relievers for 18 hits. James Shields threw 6 innings of 3-hit shutout before Scott Baker came on for the 3-inning save, allowing only a 2-run homer to Jeff Francoeur. Jacoby Ellsbury had 3/4 of the cycle by the 4th inning, but couldn't get the double in the next three at bats.
Gm 2 - Drillers win 6-5. A closer game, but the same result. For the second game in a row, three different Drillers homered. Dan Haren got the win over Erik Bedard. Cristhian Martinez recorded the save. Freddy Freeman went 4-4 for the Pigs.
Gm 3 - Drillers win 5-3. The next 5 games move to Driller Park. The Drillers exploded with a 2-out, 3-run rally in the bottom of the 8th inning for the win. Bill Bray got the win in relief while Martinez got another save.
Gm 4 - Drillers win 7-2. Ricky Romero goes all the way for the win. Paul Konerko hits 2 homers. Blake Beavan gets hit hard early but manages to throw a complete game.
Gm 5 - Warpigs win 7-2. The bottom of the Pig lineup scores 5 runs in the 2nd inning, capped off with a 3-run homer by Cameron Maybin. Mike Minor gets the complete game win. Brandon McCarthy takes the loss.
Gm 6 - Warpigs win 9-3. The Pigs beat up on James Shields, and Erik Bedard goes 5 for the win. Mike Leake gets a 4-inning save.
Gm 7 - Drillers win 9-3. The Warpigs' effort to get back into the series with the Drillers ended the moment Edinson Volquez was announced starter. On the plus side, Volquez only allowed 2 hits in his 3.2 innings. The bad news is, both were homers AND he managed to walk 7. Asdrubal Cabrera homered twice and drove in 5.
Gm 8 - Drillers win 5-3. Back in Hooterville for the final 3 games, the Drillers hit 4 solo homers. Bray gets another win in relief, and Martinez gets another save.
Gm 9 - Warpigs win 7-6. Ricky Romero fails to get an out in the 3rd inning, thanks in part to a 3-run homer by Geovanny Soto. Mike Minor gets the win, but watching this bullpen hang on to the lead was excruciating. The Drillers scored in the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th innings. Jason Hammel got the save.

Buckeye Jr lays a Tweener Split on Drillers
6/4 James Shields pitched a complete game as the DRILLERS defeated the SUPER GOOFS 8 to 6 at AT&T Park.
6/5 Shin-Soo Choo had 2 base hits and 4 RBI at AT&T Park as the SUPER GOOFS beat the DRILLERS by the count of 7 to 3.
6/6 SUPER GOOFS easily handled the DRILLERS by the score of 5 to 1. Kyle Kendrick gave a fine effort for SG. He went 5 and 2/3 innings and surrended up 5 hits and no walks. Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 3rd inning with no runs scored after that point.
8/30 SUPER GOOFS defeated the DRILLERS by a score of 4 to 1.
8/31 DRILLERS nipped the SUPER GOOFS 4 to 3 at AT&T Park in a hard fought contest.

Drillers suffer Tweener Split at home vs Buckeyes.
5/18 Shields spanks Hamels behind 14 Driller hits to take game one 9 – 3. Ellsbury and Molina each have 3 hits. Baker gets a 3-inning save.
5/19 Carpenter was too much. Haren had good stuff, walking none and striking out 10, but Driller bats went silent in this 2 – 0 Buckeye win.
8/11 Buckeyes win 2-1 behind 3 hits. Drillers have 8 hits but only a loss to show for it.
8/12 Drillers take another Buckeye ass whippin by the score of 6 – 2. Some guy named Wells had 3 hits…
8/13 Drillers salvage a Tweener Split by winning the last game 3 – 2. Buckeyes had the score tied at 3 in the 6th, on an apparent sac fly to left, but an appeal to third discovered C. Pena had left a bit early.
Zaps 4, Drillers 1
Zaps go 4 and 1 in Mudpit Park
May 25 The VIVAZAPASTAS nipped the DRILLERS in 10 innings 4 to 3 at Mudpit Park in a hard fought contest.
May 26 Zaps win 8 to 7, again in 10 innings, in a game where we started "saving ABs" after 6. Of course we rally and score 6 runs in the next two innings with our "scrubs" in. Maybe I can't read a card and have the wrong guys starting?
August 19 Max Scherzer came through with a solid 7 innings and Andrew McCutchen went yard and had 3 RBI as the VIVAZAPASTAS defeated the DRILLERS by a score of 8 to 0 at AT&T Park.
August 20 It took 12 innings, and out hitting the Zaps 14 to 6, but Drillers finally get into the win column via a walkoff tater by Longoria taking this one 5 to 4.
August 21 Shields get hammered 9 - 1. Drillers suck...

Game 1- Pigs score two in the top of the 9th to break open a tie game. Pigs win 5-3.
Game 2- Zaps bats explode as Cabrera & Bautista drive in 3 each. Zaps win 13-3.
Game 3- Bautista's two taters backup Nicasio's solid start. Zaps win 9-3.
Game 4-Scherzer and the pen stymie the Pig bats while Bautista taters again. Zaps win 5-1.
Game 5-Beaven shuts down the Zap's bats. Pigs win 4-1.

Warpigs 6, Tweeners 4
Well... Netplay sucks. But we all knew that. I bet we had to reconnect maybe 20 times. It still beats playing against a CM.
Wonder of wonders, miracles of miracles... the Warpigs took 6 of 10 from the Tweeners. The rundown...
Gm1- Warpigs win 3-1. Jeremy Hellickson endured the indignities thrown at him from the Tweener dugout and then proceeded to shut them down. A pinch hit homer by Brett Lawrie in the bottom of the 8th broke the 1-1 tie.
Gm2- Tweeners win 7-3. This was more like what we have come to expect. Gio Gonzalez got the win.
Gm3- Warpigs win 6-4. The Merry Mentor of Mediocrity was kind enough to schedule an off day between games 2 and 3, allowing the Tweeners to enjoy the ambience that is Hooterville. Daniel Hudson appears to have enjoyed the festivities the most, as he was scored on in each of the first 4 innings. The Tweeners hit 3 homers, but couldn't overcome the early deficit.
Gm4- Tweeners win 13-2. Back in Logan County for games 4 & 5, the Tweeners treated the home crowd - at least 4000 strong - to an offensive onslaught. The Tweeners scored 8 runs in the first off of Hellickson and led 11-0 after 3.
Gm5- Warpigs win 9-3. Cameron Maybin stole 4 bases. Jordan Zimmermann wasn't sharp, but went the distance for the win.
Gm6- Tweeners win 6-2. A 5-run 1st spelled doom for Mike Minor. Daniel Hudson got the road victory.
Gm7- Tweeners win 9-4. A clutch single by Victor Martinez in the 6th inning got the Tweeners within 2-1, but more importantly tired Hellickson. The Tweeners then put up an 8-spot in the 7th and cruised to victory.
Gm8- Warpigs win 6-4. David Freese hit a 3-run HR in a 4-run 1st inning for the Pigs. Mark Melancon got the final out of the game, saving it for Jake Westbrook.

Bedard was allowed to face Jeter and got him to pop up. The Pigs then erupted for 4 runs in the top of the 6th, and the Pigs had a 3-game sweep in Logan County.
The unlikely hitting stars for the Pigs were David Freese (12/24, 3 HR, 9 RBI), Cameron Maybin (13/31, a HR, 8 SB), and Hanley Ramirez (10/30, 3 HR).
Michael Morse led the Tweeners, going 13/39 with 2 homers.

DVs 3, Inmates 2
INMATES 7 – DVs 3 (at DV Land): Beachy outpitches Halladay while rare Inmate power outburst has Cargo, Beltre, and Howard all tatering.
DVs 14 – INMATES 3: (at DV Land): A close game until Chacin and then Kartsens decide to throw batting practice. Stanton and Hardy each hit two homers and the DVs total six for the game in an unmerciful bludgeoning of the LDMF.
DVs 5 – INMATES 2: (Baptist Bowl): DVs score a 5-run third inning off of Billingsley for all the runs they’d get and need.
INMATES 6 – DVs 3 (Baptist Bowl): Beachy Ks 15 in 8 innings and appears to be the only LDMF pitcher who can beat the DVs.
DVs 5 – INMATES 4 (Baptist Bowl): Halladay wins, but the Inmates score two in the bottom of the 9th and have the tying run on 3rd before Bard shuts the door. DVs have only four hits, but Inmate “pitchers” walk nine.

First full house of the year at the SnakePit as we give out "My stoopid brother bobble heads". Riot ensues because the heads are too large and heavy for the body and fall off.

Tweeners 5, Goofs 0
Tweeners sweep the Goofs at the Hooverdome. Goofs snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in game one, blowing a 3 run lead as Tweeners scored 2 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th to force overtime. Goofs scored again in the 10th, but Zobrist hit a 2-run walk-off shot in the bottom half, his second homer of the game, Tweeners won 8-7. Goofs never recovered, scoring only 6 more runs in the other 4 games. Gio and Romo combined for a 5-hit shutout in game 2. In the nightcap Felix and friends prevailed 4-2, as Romo saved both ends of the Ewing Oiler Doubleheader. Game 4 went to the Tweeners 4-1, thanks to a Michael Morse 3-run homer. Gio won again, Romo saved again. In the finale, Tweeners scored 4 times before Kyle Kendrick could record an out, Daniel Hudson and friends made it hold up for a 4-3 win, this save going to the other Sergio (Santos).

Zaps 3, Inmates 2
From the Baptist Bowl:
INMATES 3 – ZAPS 1: Norris is effective, giving up only one unearned run on 4 hits. Bastard-o gets the save.
ZAPS 14 – INMATES 10: Both teams get 18 hits in an ugly softball game. Billingsley finds the plate…often…but every pitcher except League gets ripped in this one.
ZAPS 5 – INMATES 3: Once again Billingsley shows his proficiency at throwing strikes. The LDMF bullpen does well after he’s yanked, but Zaps blast him again. Line for two starts: 7.2 IP/15 H/11 ER/9 BB and an error.
INMATES 9 – ZAPS 8: Another ugly game. A Fuk-u-dome RBI single in the 8th plates the winning run.
ZAPS 12 – INMATES 2: Inmates make three errors and leave 12 on base. Rodriguez and Capuano shut down the LDMF.
Zaps hit 8 taters in series. Inmates hit 1 (by Bogusevic…).

Yu Darvish
Fox Sports Southwest made a huge deal out of his debut. Big pregame stuff. Then they go to commercial, and when they come back, he's already thrown his first two pitches.
Later in that really long top of the first, Tom Grieve said (something like) this, "A couple of balls have been hit pretty hard, but a couple of them have been chinkers." Yes. Chinkers. I assume he was referring to Ichiro's bloop to left, but maybe that's just his new word for weak hits off of Darvish.

Zaps take three of two from the Inmates.
Game 1- Scherzer and the pen hold down the Inmate bats on the way to a 5-3 win.
Game 2- Vernon Wells smashed 2 homeruns and Jorge De La Rosa carried a no-hitter intothe 7th inning as the Inmates hold on 7-4.

Fungoes 3, Zaps 2
Fungoes win 3 of 5 at home vs Zappers!
Game 1: Fungoes win 5-3. Hanson takes the loss while Porcello gets the win. Papelbon picks up the save. Berkman clubs a homer!
Game 2: Fungoes win 3-1. Kershaw shuts down the Zaps and collects the win. Scherzer takes the hard luck loss allowing one earned run and striking out 9 in 6 1/3! Papelbon grabs another save for the Fungi.
Game 3: Zap bats explode punishing Price and the Fungoes winning it 14-5. Zaps score 6 in the first and 5 in the ninth! Wandy Rodriquez picks up the win while Price is collared with the loss. McCutchen hits two homers for the Zapper!

Computer Manager Issues
The problem I face with making a computer manager is not the options I have, it's the options I don't have.
For example, when doing detail work with the pitchers, you are given the option of "Max 6 (or 7) IP for start."
What I NEED it to offer is MINIMUM 5-6 IP for start with this pitcher.
Or just a "don't remove starter before reaching POW." I'm not convinced the "Slow hook" option will do that.
Another option is "IBB less with this pitcher." It seems to me that it would make more sense to offer "IBB MORE with this pitcher" for those unbalanced pitchers. If my pitcher is a 9L and a RH batter is up with 2-3 LH batters following, I want Hal to walk the righty and leave this pitcher in. I still can't fathom a reason for clicking on "IBB less."
And on the hitter list of options, I want one that uses the Tweener quote, "never pulled him, never will."
But mainly, I just don't trust the logic Hal uses. I recently played a game between my Warpig team and my team from the I-75 league. I created CMs for both, then I selected the SP and the lineups, but I let Hal manage the game.
In the 4th inning of one game, Hal removed Felix Hernandez (slow hook was checked). Felix is basically the only good player on that team and wasn't in any kind of major trouble in the game. Hal replaced him with Dave Pauley, a right-handed 9L pitcher with the option AVOID RIGHTIES clicked. The batter he was brought in to face? Hanley Ramirez.
In another game, in the 6th inning, Hal brought Chris Denorfia in to pinch run at first for Alberto Callaspo in a tie game. Now, Denorfia is a *, and Callaspo is not... but the hold made Denorfia a 1-12 stealer (which Hal didn't even attempt). And to make matters worse, with Sean Rodriguez already used, Callaspo had no replacement at 3b. Even weirder, Hal didn't leave Denorfia in to play 3rd, he brought in Mike Carp. It made no sense.
These are a few of the reasons why I hate playing CM games.

Mavs 3, Warpigs 2
C&D games.
Gm 1 - Mavs win 7-6 in 10 innings. Warpig Freddy Freeman hit two homers and drove in 5, but a solo shot by Casey Kotchman in the top of the 10th won the game.
Gm 2 - Mavs win 13-4. The Mavs scored early and often against the woeful Warpig pitching. The Mavs had 17 hits (oddly, none were homers). Hanley Ramirez homered twice for the Pigs.
Gm 3 - Mavs win 14-8. The two teams combined for TWELVE home runs - six by each team. Chris Young had two for the Mavs, including a 2nd inning grand slam.
Gm 4 - Warpigs win 9-2. This time the Warpigs score without the help of a homer. Jordan Zimmermann went 8 innings for the win. Brett Lawrie had a pinch hit, 3-run double.
Gm 5 - Warpigs win 3-1. Lawrie again came through in a pinch-hitting role, this time hitting a 3-run homer in the 8th inning of a scoreless game. Blake Beavan went 6 innings of 3-hit shutout ball, but wasn't around to get the win.
The road team won all 5 games. In the two games at Mavs Park, the Mavs were successful on a HR 1-3, flyout 4-20 roll THREE times. Those were the only three runs they scored in those two games.

Draft Results
You can find the Draft Results on the main page of our website. The draft grid we used during the draft is still posted, as is a cleaned-up version. I wasn't timing it, but I believe the rules meeting took 4 and a half hours. The draft took 17 hours.
The lightning round was apparently a test to see who could name the most players already off the board.
Here are some tidbits from the draft...
There were 168 carded players chosen in the regular phase of the draft (87 hitters, 81 pitchers).
There were 16 uncarded players taken (11 hitters, 5 pitchers).
There were 2 passes (Mavs and Bees).
The first player taken was Doug Fister by the Nads.
The last player taken was #186 Tony Cruz by the Wahoos.
In the lightning round, 8 teams took part.
There were 58 players selected (35 hitters, 23 pitchers).
There were 4 passes (Tweeners, Snakes, Wahoos, Rhinos).
The first player taken was #187 Jose Molina by the Drillers.
The last player taken was #248 John Lackey by the Warpigs.
There were 7 players from the lightning round who made their clubs, including...
2 by the Drillers, 2 by the Wahoos and 1 each by the Rhinos, DVs, and FFTs.
The latest a player was drafted who made a team was Frank Francisco, who was taken at #245 and made the Driller roster.
The Wahoos kept their last pick, Eduardo Nunez at #216, and now Nunez will be active for every game this year since he is the team's ONLY backup at 2b AND ss.
Altogether...
242 players were drafted: 226 carded players (122 hitters, 104 pitchers) and 16 uncarded players (11 hitters, 5 pitchers).

As far as I can tell, the earliest a guy was drafted and then later cut was #93 Alex Liddi by the DVs (who KEPT pick #199 Lahair). The DV magnate noted that he wanted to "get Liddi off the board early to ensure the Rhinos one less bat to crush the DVs overrated bullpen.”

Playing Through Stiffness

Braun, who was scratched from the lineup Tuesday with groin tightness, has been playing through stiffness for several weeks and will not play until at least Friday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
I don't know about Braun, but if stiffness in the groin were enough to keep a guy from playing baseball, I would have never even suited up in high school.

Revised Mock Draft
Now that the teams are set and the draft is a few days away, here's the latest mocking...
1. Nads - Doug Fister. Hard to screw this up, really. Darvish is not even an option, since the Nads have no reserve picks. This selection has to be announced as a "Fister to the Nads!" Ouch.
2. Fungoes - Eric Hosmer. The Fungoes traded up, and the immediate thought was Darvish. But the Fungi were secretly trying to steal Fister. Hosmer is not only a good second choice, it may be a better one.
3. Warpigs - Yu Darvish. Haha! Yes! I thought for sure he'd go 1 or 2.
4. Goofs - Melky Cabrera. A team in need of outfielders finds the best 500+ AB outfielder in the draft waiting for him. Of course, he'd still have been waiting for him in the second round.
5. Sidewinders - Brett Lawrie. The Snakeman THOUGHT he already had Lawrie, but it turns out it was Jed Lowrie. Different guy. Said the Snakeman, "It's a good thing I gave up abstaining from alcohol for Lent."
6. Tweeners - Allen Craig. Or is it Craig Allen? Either way, he's just what the doctor ordered to vault the Tweeners to the top of his division.
7. Inmates - Brandon Beachy. While the HEAD INMATE pats himself on the back for trading back 5 spots and still getting the guy he wanted, the game on tv is interrupted with the tragic news of Beachy drowning in his own urine sample.
8. DVs - Yonder Alonso. From the DV man himself, "Our goal is just to beat the Fungoes for the division. Then be one of the teams that loses to the Rhinos in the playoffs." Asked about the challenge from the Drillers, the DV dude said, "The Drillers?!? Are they still in the league?!?"

10. Killer Bees - Jemile Weeks. Weeks will team with his brother at 2b for the Bees. When asked about this pick, the Beeboy pulled his hands out of his pants just long enough to explain, "I just like the idea of putting R.Weeks and J.Weeks on the scorecard. You know? The letter in front of their name? That's so fucking COOL!!! I've ALWAYS wanted to do that!"

Google Docs
The three google docs spreadsheets (Rosters/Trades, Draft Grid/Available Players, and W/L records) are again available for you to edit. You are responsible for making your own changes when you make a trade, draft a player, or play games.
When you make a trade, move the players and the picks between teams and record the trade on the Trades page. It's on a tab at the bottom of the Rosters page.

Let's Draft!
All Pre-draft rosters and the Draft Grid are updated. You can see them on our website or on google docs. The Rhinos set a league record by protecting 30 players. The Nads kept the fewest at 16. The FFTs have the fewest choices in the draft, with 6. The Nads, at 16, will have the most picks. The Wahoos have the last 5 selections in the draft and 7 of the last 9.
We still have to officially vote on it, but assuming Terry's proposal for a post-draft-draft of undrafted carded players passes, it would start at pick 187. To refresh your memory, I will repost the proposal here on Big Innings.

We still have to officially vote on it, but assuming Terry's proposal for a post-draft-draft of undrafted carded players passes, it would start at pick 187. To refresh your memory, I will repost the proposal here on Big Innings.

The Free Agent Draft Proposal
Terry presented this idea back in the fall (summer?), I think.

Immediately following the conclusion of the regular draft,
all teams wishing to participate may hang around for a “free agent” draft.
Here’s how it works:
1.
It is comprised of all players not already on a
team or drafted (carded players only).
2.
The draft order is the original draft order and
includes only the teams who want to take part.
3.
You have a strict 1-minute time limit. Once you
go over that limit, you are finished picking.
4.
No passing.
5.
You may draft as many players as you want (10
player max), but you still must cut down to 30 by noon the next day.

Rhinos and Wahoos trade picks
The Wahoos traded picks 28 and 58 along with a reserve pick to the Rhinos for pick 40 and a 2013 1st round pick.

The Beeboy also agreed to buy the Pigman a meal from Whataburger to compensate for the poor sportsmanship and unsightly greed demonstrated by the Beeboy during this whole ordeal. The meal must include fries and drink. Pie is optional, but since the option lies with the Pigman, I'm guessing there will be pie.

The Bees are Swarming, Vol.2
SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
A swarm of bees buzzed into Salt River Fields in Scottsdale on Sunday, forcing a 41-minute delay in the spring training game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants.

With no score and one out in the top of the second, the Giants had runners on second and third and Freddy Sanchez at the plate when a swarm of bees appeared in right-center field, according to the Arizona Diamondbacks' website.
Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy, in his first spring training outing, was on the mound when the bees first started up and he was forced to stop pitching.
"I saw them (the bees) at first base," Kennedy said. "There were a couple around me. I was not going to get stung so I walked back to the dugout."
Ground crews used cotton candy and lemonade to attract the swarm away from spectators. A record crowd of 12,546 was at the stadium.
"We were sitting there watching the game and there was a ball in the outfield," said fan Todd Matthews. "The bees came in and started swarming around first base."
The bees congregated at the end of the Giants' first-base dugout, and grounds-crew personnel as well as local fire officials worked at getting rid of them, according to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
No one was hurt.
Overall, Kennedy threw 29 pitches and allowed one run and three hits in 1 1-3 innings.
The San Francisco Giants split squad went on to win the game, 11-1.
