Looking Ahead - The NERDD 2011

Predicted Order of Finish:

1. FFTs
2. Drillers
3. DVs
4. Fungoes


FFTS

Pitching: The FFTs have a really good 1-2-3 with Weaver, Oswalt, and Kuroda. There are a few guys fighting it out for the 4th spot, but the limited-inning Strasburg is the key to the FFT's post season rotation. Mariano is still the anchor in the pen, with assistance from Thatcher and Camp.

Lineup: The FFTs can field an all-1 outfield (Hamilton, Bourn, and Ichiro), but the infield defense won't have anyone better than a 3. The offense is solid and will revolve around Hamilton, Carlos Ruiz, Ichiro, Furcal, M.Young, and the Chipper/Manny DH platoon.

Draft: No first round pick, but 3 picks in the first 50 (18, 34, 50). Not great, but not the DVs either.

Needs: Bullpen, first base, and defensive replacements in the infield.

Best case scenario: 90-95 wins and a trip to the World Series.

Worst case scenario: A good pitching staff and middle of the order should keep it from ever getting too ugly. Worst case is probably 81-81 and no playoffs, but that would take a lot of things going wrong.

If the Buckeye managed this team: 120 wins easy.

If the Head Inmate managed this team: Hamilton goes back to drugs, Strasburg never steps on a mound again, and the team loses 90 games (despite outscoring and outhomering their opponents).


DRILLERS

Pitching: Lincecum's post season for SF was as good as it gets, but he had a below average (for him) regular season. He, Haren, and Niemann give the Drillers a quality rotation. Even better is the bullpen, with B.Wilson, B.Sanches, and Burnett.

Lineup: One can get Driller-envy looking at 3b (Longoria) and catcher (Posey and Hanigan). And Konerko is an excellent bat at either 1b or DH. It drops off some from there. Vladimir had a fine year, and Murphy, Ludwick, and Jeter are capable producers, but none are great and there are big holes to fill in CF and 2b.

Draft: 3 picks in the top 50 (13, 29, 45).

Needs: 2b, cf, and maybe a 4th starting pitcher who is better than the choices currently on the team.

Best case scenario: 90-95 wins and a first round appearance - maybe even a trip to the second round.

Worst case scenario: The Drillers could take the route of playing for 2012, draft some kids, and lose 90 games. Having Lincecum, Posey, and Longoria puts them in a position where a lot of teams would be happy to trade teams straight up, but the Drillers might be a year away.

If the Buckeye managed this team: 110 wins with Wilson getting 85 saves.

If the Head Inmate managed this team: Ludwick plays CF, Vlad plays RF, and the team goes 82-80 to get the 9th pick in the draft (despite outscoring and outhomering their opponents).


DVS

Pitching: Halladay, Cahill, and Latos are as good a 1-2-3 as almost anybody. Bard and Madsen are decent relievers.

Lineup: Fairly solid lineup with Holliday, Kinsler, McCann. Good defense too. Fowler got the cf-1. Andrus got the ss-1. Mags didn't get a 4. Just too many holes to fill.

Draft: And here's the problem. Still suffering the effects of the Halladay acquisition, the DVs have only one pick in the first 50 (21). After that, it's pick 53. Once again the Propeller Head is forced to sit back and belch while watching the other teams in his division get stronger thr0ugh the draft.

Needs: If Holliday is the DH, then there's a hole in LF. Alvarez is a great prospect at 3b, but he's not there yet. Helton at 1b is looking old. And like everybody, bullpen is needed.

Best case scenario: 85-90 wins and a first round "flickin the bean" exit.

Worst case scenario: Too good to play their way to a top 3 draft pick next year, but they could find a way to lose a couple more than they win.

If the Buckeye managed this team: 100 walks for Helton. 100 steals for Andrus. 100 wins for the DVs.

If the Head Inmate managed this team: Halladay walks out during Spring Training and takes a job campaigning for Sarah Palin. Never pitches again. Still, the team wins 80 games (despite outscoring and outhomering their opponents).


FUNGOES

Pitching: Down years by Papelbon and... well, just about everybody except Price and Kershaw.

Lineup: Speedy and dangerous at the top (Gardner and Span) and powerful in the middle (Zimmerman and Cruz). That's about it. Wieters is a nice guy to have at catcher, but he's a year or so away from being elite, and by then Berkman and the O-dog will be replacing Mitch Williams in the studio at MLB-TV.

Draft: If the Fungoes are to repeat as NERDD champs, this is where it will happen. They have two 1st round picks and four in the first 50 (5, 11, 27, 43). And the Fungo is one of the best drafters in the league, so anything is possible.

Needs: SS (the Fungoes' dogs were even seen taking groundballs there recently), DH, starting pitching, and relief pitching. Berkman's days at 1b are numbered as well.

Best case scenario: 85-90 wins if they have a great draft.

Worst case scenario: If the Fungoes decide to draft kids to make WTF the place to be in 2012, this team could lose 100.

If the Buckeye managed this team: Price goes 42-3, Kershaw goes 41-4. Then they start every game of the post season, completing them all. Fungoes win! Fungoes win!

If the Head Inmate managed this team: RIP Price and Kershaw. Team wins only 60 games (despite outscoring and outhomering their opponents).

Game 1

Tweeners win in an 18 inning affair by a score of 3 to 2. Mark Reynolds smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' and the Rhinos went down without a fight in the bottom of the 18th. Running out of relievers the Rhinos pitched Gonzalez for 8 innings; despite the HR in the 18^th Gonzalez only gave up 3 hits and 2 walks.

Game 2

Felix Hernandez tossed a complete game and designated hitter Mark Reynolds lofted one into the 'cheap seats' beating the Rhinos 4 to 3. The Tweeners took the lead for good in the eighth by scoring 3 off the Rhinos vaunted bull pen.

Game 3

Pablo Sandoval slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI and Adam Wainwright pitched a complete game beating the Rhinos 4 to 3.

Game 4

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. The Rhinos were victorious in the 10th inning. After Matt Kemp smashed a bases-empty homerun, resulting in an exciting win for the Rhinos and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.

Game 5

Brendan Ryan hit 2 triples and had 4 RBI as the Rhinos took a 15 to 4 beating. Adam Wainwright picked up the win pitching 7 2/3 innings.

Inmates go 3-4 at NADS, neither team played very well – both teams were inconsistent with team bats either getting hot or going completely dormant.

The Fungoes win the NERDD with the Drillers coming in second. The Drillers will be the second wild card in the playoffs.

From our girl in Tulsa...

In a series reminiscent of previous year’s titanic struggles, the DVs and Drillers waged an epic series that took the entire 7 games to decide. (Not really – I couldn’t get these piece of crap games done fast enough!).

Drillers take 4 of 7- here’s a breakdown:

1 – Drillers win 12-4. Haren K’s 10, Longoria collects 3 hits and Drillers punish their former teammate (and now former DV) Aaron Cook.

2 – DVs win 2-1 behind Cahill and 5 relievers that hold the Drillers to 6 hits

3 – DVs utilize the resurgent Derek Lowe to a 1-0 shoutout. DVs only have 3 hits off of former Polish Olympian Mark Rzepczynsk-ksnyzcpezR, but one of them is Ian Kinsler’s 36^th home run. Kinsler remarked after the game: “This is better than winning the World Series with the Rangers in 2010”

4- Drillers win 7-4 as the Drillers hammer Roy Halladay for 6 runs in 4 IP. Jeter goes 3 for 3 and the Driller LaRoche has 2 HRs (the DV LaRoche has none)

5 – DVs hammer Jeff Niemann for 9 runs in 5 IP and win 9-4. Cahill completes his rookie season with another win to move his final record to 6-12

6 – Drillers prevail 2-0 as they only get to see Aaron Cook for 1 batter as the DVs quickly go to the bullpen while banishing Cook to detail Halladay’s car in the player’s parking lot for the remainder of the game. Hamell (Jason, not Dorothy), Wilson and Hoffman combine to limit the DVs to 5 hits

7 – Drillers continue their mastery with a 1-0 shutout. Mark Rzepczynsk-ksnyzcpezR (with his mother and potato farming father in the stands to see him play in person for the first time) combines with Wilson and Hoffman on a 4 hitter. Seth Smith hits a home run for the game’s only run. Todd Helton makes the final out in the DV season – (perhaps the last ever in a DV uniform?).

DVs end 72-90 – going 9-22 over the last month plus. Interesting that the team hit .252, but did not have anyone hit under .200.

Good luck to all in the playoffs – Stanton, Castro, Hellickson and Wallace look forward to their first post season appearances next fall.

From the GunFo...

Fungoes and Drillers tangled in an all out knockdown 14 game series with the division hanging in the balance, here are the results:

Game 1: Drillers win game 1 at home 6-5. Holland takes the loss for the Fungi. Hammel wins it for the Home team while Hoffman picks up the save.

The Drillers took the lead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring 3 runs on 4 hits. After an out was recorded, Juan Pierre began the Driller spurt when he
tripled. Paul Konerko followed and he popped a two-run clout over the fence. Evan Longoria then doubled. Ryan Ludwick was up next and he drew a walk.
Kelly Shoppach was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Jacoby Ellsbury joined his teammates in the uprising and banged out a single.
Ellsbury took second on the throw. Nick Johnson followed, but he was set down on strikes. The Fungoes were retired without difficulty in the 9th.

Game 2: Home cooking for the Drillers as they take a 3-0 lead early and hold on for the 4-2 win. Shields picks up the win and Hoffman

records another save for the home team. Porcello takes the loss.

Game 3: Fungoes jump out to an 8-1 lead and win this one easily 8-3. Price gets the win while Rzepczynski takes the loss. Orlando Hudson

was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He slapped a base-hit in the
1st inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 3rd inning and doubled which was good for two runs in the 4th inning.

Game 4: Fungoes win a pitchers duel to complete the four game set at Drillerville 2-1. Bergeson picks up the win and Papelbon the save. Haren takes the tough luck loss.

Game 5: At WTF Drillers win it 5-4 with a run in the 11th. Trevor Hoffman was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Joe Nathan earned the save. Tim Byrdak was

given the loss in relief. The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. The Drillers won the game in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Ryan Hanigan banged

out a single. Pierre got a good lead and stole second. Jacoby Ellsbury then doubled. Nick Johnson was the next batter, but he struck out. Derek Jeter was a strikeout
victim, unable to help out. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all.

Game 6: Drillers win again at WTF! The Drillers erupted with the game winning runs in the 8th inning as they scored 4 runs on 3 base hits. The highlight belonged to Asdrubal Cabrera

who silenced the stadium when he doubled clearing the bases. The Fungi threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Jason Hammel allowed 4 runs in 7 innings, and picked

up the victory. Trevor Hoffman got the save. Jonathan Papelbon(4-2) ended up with the loss in relief.

Game 7: Drillers complete the sweep of the three game set at WTF with a 3-0 win. Shields pitched a solid game. He allowed 5 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings. Both teams ended up with

6 hits on the night. Trevor Hoffman recorded the save, his 7th. Holland absorbed the loss. He allowed 2 runs and 4 hits in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Game 8: Derek Jeter jacked one out of the ballyard and had 4 RBI and Dan Haren tossed a complete game at Wrigley Field where the DRILLERS beat the FUNGOES 8 to 3.

It was a good day for the Drillers thanks to Jeter. He lined a base-hit which scored a run in the 1st inning, lined a one-base hit in the 7th inning and rifled a three-run blast in the 8th inning.

Drillers finished with 15 hits in the victory. Haren allowed 3 runs on the game. Ryan Rowland-Smith suffered the loss. He allowed 14 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.

Game 9: In a tight game it was the FUNGOES 6, the DRILLERS 4 at Driller Field. Scott Feldman earned his pay with a solid performance for Fungoes. He was reached for 4 hits and 1 walk

in 7 innings. The Fungoes had 11 hits for the game and the Drillers had 5. Jeff Niemann took the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 8 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

Game 10: The Fungoes win again at Driller Feild 8-5. The Fungoes jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring a single run using 2 hits. Fungoes had a total of 10 hits for the game.

Jonathan Papelbon got the win allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. The losing pitcher was Jason Hammel. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 7 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Game 11: In a close game it was the FUNGOES 6, the DRILLERS 4 at WTF. Fungoes jumped on top of the Drillers in the 4th inning scoring a single run on 2 hits. The Drillers were retired

without difficulty in the 9th. The win was credited to Tim Wakefield who went 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs. Jonathan Papelbon earned the save, his 30th. James Shields was
charged with the loss. He was knocked around by DEREK, allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.

Game 12: Scott Feldman went the distance in game one of a double header at WTF where the FUNGOES beat the DRILLERS by the score of 6 to 1. Feldman pitched a fine game. He allowed

8 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. The Fungoes had 9 hits for the afternoon. Dan Haren was the losing pitcher. He allowed 6 runs and 9 hits in 8 innings.

Game 13: The DRILLERS pitching staff gave the WTF fans an evening that they'll never forget in game two of the double header, by tossing a combined no-hitter! The tension started to build around

the 6th inning. By the 9th inning the crowd was electrified. The Fungoes went down quietly in the bottom of the 9th. The win was credited to Jeff Niemann(2-0) who went 7 innings allowing

no runs. Trevor Hoffman gained credit for his 8th save. Ryan Rowland-Smith absorbed the loss. You probably have a better chance of winning the lottery than this happening,' said Niemann

inning, laced a one-base hit resulting in a run in the 5th inning and blasted a two-run home run in the 6th inning. The Fungoes had 15 hits for the game while the Drillers had 7. Rick Porcello

picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. Porcello got help from Hideki Okajima who earned his 2nd save. The loss was charged to Jason Hammel. He got hit hard, allowing

9 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

9/13 gm 2 of DH - Wahoos 5, Warpigs 2 - Johnny Damon pinch hit a 3-run homer with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.

9/14 - Wahoos 3, Warpigs 2 - Albert Pujols hit 2 solo home runs, but that was the only offense allowed by Scott Baker, who went the distance. Mike Pelfrey went all the way for the Pigs, but was the hard luck loser. The Warpigs turned a triple play in the first inning.

The series ends the season for the Warpigs, who finish 69-93. In 24 years in NASOMA, the Warpigs have never ended a season with between 70 and 89 wins. Every year the win total has been in either the 60s, the 90s, or the 100s.

Fungoes and Mavs got five in today with the Fungi winning 3 of 5. Here are the high (low?) lights:

Game 1:

Fungoes break open a close game in the 7th with a seven spot! Gallardo takes the loss while Price picks up the win. Three inning save for Feldman.

Game 2:

Mavs get to Wakefield for 6 in the first. Hard to believe but Wakefield goes the distance losing 13-1. Hochevar picks up the win. Chris Davis enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He slapped a base-hit in the
1st inning and emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun in the 8th inning.
TAD finished with 16 hits while DEREK ended up with 4.

Game 3:

Fungoes win game three 8-2. Bergeson picks up the Win for the Fungi and Okajima earns the three-inning save. The loss goes to Marquis. Fungoes simply wore out the Mav pitching staff, scoring in 6 different innings.

Game 4:

Yovani Gallardo and Tim Wakefield locked horns in a pitcher's duel
with Gallardo and the MAVS coming out on top of the FUNGOES 2 to
0.

Mav's came up with 2 runs in the 4th inning when they had 3 base hits. They
would hold up as the winning runs. After the 4th inning, neither team was
able to score.

Jose Valverde earned the save.

Game 5:

Designated hitter Ryan Zimmerman homered and had 4 RBI at What the Fuck Field where
the WTF FUNGOES beat the MAVS by the score of 8 to 6.

Zimmerman made sure the WTF fans enjoyed themselves. He doubled scoring two
baserunners in the 3rd inning and smashed a two-run homer in the 7th inning.
Fungoes banged out 9 hits on the night.

David Price allowed 5 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory.
Jonathan Papelbon earned the save. Robinson Tejeda was the loser
in relief.

Fungoes record now stands at 83-60.

35 Years Ago Today

It's hard to believe, but it was 35 years ago today that the Red Sox and Reds played game 6 of the World Series. Arguably the most significant game in baseball history, it ended just after midnight with Carlton Fisk hitting a 12th-inning home run off the foul pole in left.

I still remember where I was: sitting on the floor in front of our tv in Kettering, Ohio. Every day at school I was surrounded by Reds fans, but I liked Yaz and the Sox.

Good times.

Makes me feel old.

Two biggest news flashes: Jair Jurrjens threw a no-hitter for the Bees, allowing only 3 walks in the 6-0 victory over the Rhinos.

The Snakes and VuvuZelas tied for the AWD title with records of 97-65. Per NASOMA tie-breaker rules, the Sidewinders and Vuvus will play a 1-game playoff to determine which team wins the division (and gets a bye in the first round), and which team has to turn around and play on the road the next day as a wild card. The home team for the 1-game playoff will be determined by a roll of the 20-sided die by the Commissioner.

Rhinos go 3-2 vs Bees

It was one of those typical series between the Bees and Rhinos, 4 of 5 games were determined by 1 run and could of gone either way, luckily the high priced Rhino bullpen came through.

Game 1 - Rhinos get shut out 1 - 0 by Hansen as the Rhino bats couldn't put together two consecutive hits.

Game 2 - Trailing 6 to 7 in the 8th Kemp singled stole second and with 2 outs Dickerson doubled and Hanley followed up with a single to give the Rhinos an 8-7 win.

Game 3 - Rhinos win 5 to 4 on 8 strong innings from Millwood, Bell picked up a nervous save.

Game 4 - Rhinos win another close one 4 to 3, with Bell rounding out his season with a save.

Game 5 - Is one for the Bees record books with Jurrjens pitching a no-hitter against the Rhinos and was only 3 walks from a perfect game.

4/4 the battle of 2 run HRs is won by the snakes 3-1(Kubel hit two,wright and Kemp added one each for the final score Snakes 6 Rhinos 2.) Thornton the loser, Soriano the winner.

4/5 Snakes get to Z Duke early and hang on for the 10-5 win. 7 HR in the game.

Congratulations to the Sidewinders for winning the extra reserve pick. Final standings of the contest will be posted on the website as soon as all games today are completed, but the Snakes have clinched thanks to the Braves' win over the Phillies and the Rockies' loss in St. Louis.

Extra Reserve - down to the wire

With one day left in the regular season, the Snakes have a 1-win lead over the Pigs and Rhinos. There are many possible outcomes, including even a 3-way tie, but the most likely outcome is the Snakes hanging on. There is even a 50-50 chance there will be a game played Monday, which would also benefit the Sidewinders. The only good news for the Pigs and Rhinos is that the Snakes cannot win a tiebreaker.

Here are the games to watch:

Phillies at Braves - If the Braves win, the Pigs are eliminated.

Yankees at Red Sox & Rays at Royals - Rhinos have the Rays; Snakes and Pigs have the Yankees.

Padres at Giants - Padres have put up a valiant effort to hang on; can they do it for one more day? The Snakes hope not.

Buckeyes jump out quick with 3 runs in the second and run off with a 7-2 win. The Wahoos were held to three hits highlighted by a Johnny Damon homer.

Extra Reserve Pick Update

After games on September 24th, the race is as tight as ever. The Warpigs and Rhinos are tied at the top with the Sidewinders 2 wins back. And the tie-breaker between the Pigs and Rhinos is also tied.

The only difference between the picks of the Pigs and Rhinos is the Yankee/Ray selection. The Snakes (who have the Yankees) are helped by the Giants and their lead over the Rockies, but they have fallen back a little due to the recent failures of the Braves.

Extra Reserve Pick

It's coming right down to the wire in the race for the extra reserve pick. The Snakes have been comfortably ahead most of the way, but as of yesterday, the Pigs are only one win behind and the Rhinos trail by 2.

Naturally, these three teams have a lot of the same picks (Rangers, Twins, Cardinals), but it's the other three races that make it interesting. In the AL East, the Snakes and Pigs have the Yankees, but the Rhinos have the Rays. And after the Yankees were swept by the Rangers, the Rays are right on their tail. In the NL East, the Phillies (Pigs and Rhinos) are battling with the Braves (Snakes). And out west, the Rockies (Pigs and Rhinos) are two wins behind the Giants (Snakes).

The Drillers had been in the hunt but faltered with the Dodgers. They are now 9 wins behind the Snakes and need a Dodger miracle run to get back into this race.

In the case of a tie, the tie-breakers are also close. The question was the difference in number of wins between the Yankees and the Nationals. Right now, the Yankees have 27 more wins. The Snakes (37), the Warpigs (31), and the Rhinos (21) are all close.

And yes, I know it's too early to judge his career, but even at (almost) ten seasons, his numbers put him right there in the discussion with the likes of Rogers Hornsby, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson, Honus Wagner, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, Joe DiMaggio, Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, and Frank Thomas.

Wahoos win the first two of the five in two close games (7-3 and 4-2). Ending Game 1 was a Miguel Montero getting hit with a batted ball by Dan Uggla (or was it the other way around on the names). Game 3 went 12 innings and the Wahoos lose 10-9. Game 4 was more of the same as the Wahoos lose in 12, 10-9. Game 5 had a familiar feel. Nads score 10 more and Wahoos get 6.

Johnny Damon had a 5-hit game in one of the 12-inning games. Wahoos also had 19 hits in a loss.

August winding down...

Wahoos, Inmates, and Rhinos are a few games short of the 120 game goal. You still have a week, though. Get 'r done!

Well, you know by now there will be no game report from the Zapper. Everybody else in the league sends SOMETHING. Game scores... short or long game stories... but not the Zapper. Not a word. Nothing. Nada. Well, except for the asterisk. That's all that was in his e-mail. Again. Not even so much as game scores, because he's determined to be the bigger prick. But ask anybody who knows me, I CAN BE A MUCH BIGGER PRICK!

Seriously, this is the longest I have ever seen a guy stay on the rag. Hey commish, shouldn't there be demerits for not reporting results correctly? lol. I have no doubt that he sees this as his own personal FUCK YOU to the Pigs, but let's face it: If he won't take part in trying to make this a fun league, he's saying fuck you to all of us.

When a guy quits, don't we have to have a league vote to let him back in? We did it with the Pilots. We did it with the Nads. We SHOULD have had a vote on the Zaps. Now THAT would have been an interesting vote.

I'm sorry if my speaking up has made any of you uncomfortable. Oh, sure, it would be easier to just keep my mouth shut and let the little girl bleed. But hey, I'm just gonna have some fun at her expense until she comes to her senses and offers a sincere apology to all of us.

Wahoos split the first two games losing Game 1, 4-1, and winning Game 2, 6-5, in walk-off fashion. A Parra single was the difference.

Zaps whip us 6-3 in Game 3.

Travis Hafner's grand slam lifts us in Game 4, 5-2. Kyle Lohse had a no-no into the sixth in Game 5 and we hold on to win, 6-1.

Snakes pummeled Inmates buttocks today:

Snakes 6 – Inmates 1 (Snake Pit) DH game 1: Inmates make 3 errors and managed one run on a Chipper Jones homer. Zambrano shuts Beakless Chicken Gang on 5 hits.

Snakes 2 – Inmates 0 (Snake Pit) DH game 2: Santana pitches a complete game loss as 5 Snake pitchers hold the Dickless Wonders to 2 hits.

Inmates 4 – Snakes 3 (14 innings)(Snake Pit): Beltre’s single in the top of the 14^th pushed the Inmates over the top. A one-run Inmate lead in the 10^th was erased when Kubel (cheatin’ bastage) hit his second homer of the game.

Snakes 6 – Inmates 0 (Baptist Bowl): Danks throws 4-hit shutout. ‘Nuf said.

Snakes 1 – Inmates 0 (11 innings)(Baptist Bowl): 5 Snake pitchers hand the Inmates their 3^rd shutout of the series. Inmates manage only 3 hits. Shitfuck.

Inmates and DVs played WeirdBall for our last five:

INMATES 12 – DVs 11 (Tulsa): A classic softball game highlighted by a pair of Adam Dunn homers for the Inmates. Time just ran out before more runs scored. Inmate defense (?) makes 3 errors and allows numerous hits.

DVs 9 – INMATES 8 (Tulsa): In a takeoff on recent Inmate/Buckeye games, the DVs win on an Ordonez walk-off single in the last of the 9^th, aided by an Inmate error. Dunn hits two more taters.

INMATES 7 – DVs 2 (Baptist Bowl): Anderson wins despite allowing 8 hits and 6 walks in 7 2/3. Beltre drives in 3 and the DVs fizzle out.

DVs 9 – INMATES 4 (Baptist Bowl): Another humdinger of a snoozer as the DVs totally out-class the Beakless Chicken Gang.

DVS 2 – INMATES 1 (Baptist Bowl): Pitching finally kicks in, but Inmate lack of defense plays another big part in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Byrd tater is the winning hit for the DVs, after Inmates allow unearned run in 6^th.

Game 1 @DVs – Inmates kick the crap out of Halladay – win 12-11, Dunn hits 2 HRs

Game 2 @DVs - DVs win in the 9^th 9-8 in another softball game as Magglio Ordonez walks off with an RBI single. Dunn hits 2 more HRs.

Game 3 @inmates – Brett Anderson pitches well and Inmates keep hitting with a 7-2 win

Game 4 @Inmates – Halladay wins his 20^th in a 9-4 win

Game 5 @Inmates – Finally a normal game in the new “age of the pitcher” as the DVs win 2-1.

The Vanishing Error

I watched today as Robinson Cano hit a 2-hopper to second in the bottom of the 8th inning. The fielder moves a step to his right and fields in cleanly with plenty of time to throw to first for the out. But as he transfers the ball from glove to throwing hand, he drops it and it rolls several feet behind him. Official scorer? Base hit.

Official scorers should not in a position where they feel forced to make calls one way or another. Make the hitters earn their hits. Hold fielders accountable for what they do and don't do on the field. They are judges and their calls should be considered unbiased. Players and managers can appeal, but the scorers should never feel pressured or obligated to make calls favoring the home team and its stars.

It's nothing new, of course. I can remember a Ranger game where the official scorer rightfully gave an error on a hard hit ball to second by Juan Gonzalez. The call cost Juan a hit and an RBI. Gonzalez spent the rest of the game (which just happened to be one of the greatest comebacks ever by the Rangers) yelling and gesturing up at the press box. He cared much less about his team's efforts than he did about his numbers. The scorer eventually changed it to a hit to keep Juan from further Roid rage. Pitiful.

Some good news, though. Last week in a Ranger game, Ian Kinsler was given an error on a ball he never got within 15 feet of touching. A steal of second caught Kinsler napping. Nobody covered second and the runner easily made it to third on the throw. Initially, the error was given to Molina, whose throw was right on the bag. Of course, the scorer had no way of knowing which fielder was responsible for the bag (Andrus didn't cover either). Maybe Molina wasn't even supposed to throw the ball. It took a call from the Ranger dugout to get it changed. That's the way it's supposed to work.

Tweeners at DVs

Despite some netplay hiccups that are clearly linked to Strato’s inferior code, the DVs took 2 from the Tweeners at the DV Hospice.

Game one saw Roy Halladay run his record to 19-7 with an 8-4 win, and in game 2 Scott Kazmir and a couple of relievers held the Tweeners at bay with a 3-1 win.

The series will continue at a yet to be determined location which Dr. Kovarkian selects.

Tweeners drop 2 of 3 at home to finish the season series vs. Zaps. Game one was a good one; Utley's 8th inning homer off K-Rod tied it (HR 1-3, fly), but in the bottom half Zobrist comes off the bench for the pinch-hit BPHR (1-5) off Kuo. Howell saves the 4-3 win. Wainwright and Hernandez both lose again in games 2 and 3 by scores of 7-5 and 7-6.
